Wolves 1 (Griffiths 90+4)
Oldham Athletic 2 (Philliskirk 19, Rooney 73)
Wolves are out of this season’s FA Cup after a lack lustre performance against Oldham Athletic in front of a meagre Molineux crowd.
George Elokobi, Jack Price, Leigh Griffiths and Björn Sigurdarson returned to the starting line-up in place of Dave Edwards and David Davis, and the injured James Henry and Bakary Sako.
Wolves kicked-off attacking the North Bank end on the coldest night of the season so far. There wasn’t much to choose between the teams in the opening stages.
But the visitors had a great chance in the seventh minute when Korey Smith played Danny Philliskirk though on goal. Carl Ikeme spotted the danger and he was quickly off his line to save superbly and when the loose ball ran to Cristian Montano on the edge of the box, he lifted it over the bar.
Wolves’ first real chance came in the 14th minute as Kevin McDonald latched onto a half clearance and hit a searing 20-yard volley that drew a fine, diving save from Mark Oxley in the Oldham goal
From the corner conceded, taken by Griffiths, the ball fell to Ethan Ebanks-Landell at the back post and wrong footed he succeeded only in prodding it into the side netting just the wrong side of the post.
Oldham took the lead in the 19th minute after Elokobi had fouled James Dayton just outside the home box. Jonson Clarke-Harris curled in the free-kick and although Ikeme dived to collect the ball it squirmed from his grasp and Philliskirk was there to knock it over the line.
Montano was looking for a second as he let fly from distance but his effort was wide of the mark as Wanderers tried in vain to make a significant impact on the game.
Richard Stearman was shown the yellow card after catching Philliskirk, and then James Tarkowski powered a header a foot over the bar following a corner from Anton Rodgers.
Half-Time: Wolves 0 Oldham 1
Kenny Jackett made two changes for the start of the new half with Samuel Ricketts replacing Elokobi and Zeli Ismail going on for Ebanks-Landell. Scott Golbourne dropped back from midfield to defence.
But still the main threats were coming from the visitors and after Stearman had blocked Philliskirk’s close range shot, Ikeme did well to hold on to an angled effort from Montano.
Ikeme made another first class save from Philliskirk who had homed in on a long through ball with Clarke-Harris miskicking well wide from the rebound.
The home defence was struggling to contain the lively Philliskirk and he went close again in the 53rd minute with a searing shot on the turn that was only just wide.
Griffiths gave the home fans something to cheer when he beat two men on a run into the Oldham box, but Oxley saved the striker’s low shot.
Then a cross from Ismail dropped to Griffiths on the far side and his first time shot flew inches over the bar. Shortly afterwards when Montano fouled Griffiths some 22-yards out, the Scot tried his luck from the free-kick only for the ball to bounce away off the defensive wall.
Midway through the half Lee Evans was Wolves’ final change when he took the place of Sigurdarson.
Luck was with Wolves when Philliskirk, from an acute angle, struck the inside of the far post with the ball bouncing away. But Oldham doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute when a home attack broke down and substitute Sidney Schmeltz raced down the left and passed inside to another substitute, Adam Rooney, who made no mistake from the edge of the box.
Price was yellow carded for a challenge on Rodgers and he was followed into the book by Schmeltz for not retreating at a free-kick.
Twice Evans figured as Wolves tried to get into the game. The midfielder got to the by-line and hit a low cross that went right through just a couple of feet in front of the line with no-one able to apply the finishing touch. Then he hit a shot that drew a diving save from Oxley.
In stoppage time Griffiths smashed a shot against the post and a minute later he took advantage when Golbourne’s cross bounced over a defender to finally beat Oxley.
But it was too little too late for Wolves as the referee blew for time immediately Oldham restarted.
