U21 report | Tottenham 5-1 Wolves

Tottenham (Soonsup-Bell 20, Ashcroft 26, Kyerematen 65, Lankshear 68, Pond OG 76) Wolves (Holman 32)

Wolves under-21s were well beaten by Tottenham Hotspur, who returned to the top of the Premier League 2 table on Monday night.

The Old Gold were just a goal behind at the break thanks to Fletcher Holman halving the deficit, before three quickfire goals in the second period put the game out of sight at the Lamex Stadium.

There wasn’t much to separate the two sides early on, although Jimmy Storer was called into action following a neat Spurs move. Tyrell Ashcroft nicked the ball high up before Will Lankshear’s flick found Jamie Donley who forced Storer to tip his low attempt around the post.

At the other end, Fil Mabete’s ball over the top to Tyler Roberts was one which saw the attacker given the opportunity to run at his man before cutting inside and shooting, but his effort was deflected out for a corner.

Spurs broke the deadlock on the 20-minute mark as Rio Kyerematen got around Mabete down the left, before his cross reached Jude Soonsup-Bell at the back post who kept his head over the ball to finish low into the opposite corner.

And it was two just six minutes later. Wolves initially did well to push the attack wide but Soonsup-Bell turned provider by teeing up Ashcroft who found the same corner as his teammate with an accurate finish.

However, the Old Gold soon reduced the deficit as Holman pounced on a loose pass back to Luca Gunter, closed down the goalkeeper and blocked the clearance before tapping home into an empty net.

The visitors hunted an equaliser as Ty Barnett’s free-kick was then met by the head of Caden Voice who rose well to nod back across goal, but Tom Edozie could only head into the gloves of Gunter.

Half-time | Tottenham 2-1 Wolves

Wolves had Storer to thank for ensuring the home side didn’t regain their two-goal lead just seconds into the second 45. Donley’s smart turn and ball in behind found the run of Tyrese Hall who looked to bend one into the far corner but Storer, at full stretch, got a glove to the ball to palm it behind for a corner.

And the Wolves stopper had to be at his very best on the hour mark as Spurs pushed for a third. After receiving the ball following a cross from the right, Lankshear cut back inside and aimed for the top corner, but there was Storer with a diving save to pluck the ball away. From the resulting corner, Storer was again there to thwart the hosts as he stood in the way of Soonsup-Bell’s flick at the near post.

Keto-Diyawa’s short header back to Storer was then pounced upon by Lankshear who looked to lob the goalkeeper, but Storer stood tall to save.

However, despite a fine few minutes keeping the scoreline at two, Storer was unable to prevent a quickfire third and fourth. First, Kyerematen’s cross looped in with the help of Storer’s glove, before Lankshear capitalised on a loose touch by Alfie Pond to coolly slot underneath the goalkeeper.

It was five on 76 minutes as Lankshear won the ball back before spreading it wide for Yago De Santiago Alonso who ran at the Wolves defence, cut inside and saw his effort, which was going wide, find the back of the net via a deflection off Pond.

Spurs almost added a sixth but were denied by the woodwork when Soonsup-Bell rattled the post from close range, meaning they had to settle for five.
