McNamara | 'The girls showed great character'

Manager Dan McNamara highlighted his side’s positive reaction to conceding in the second half as Wolves Women took three points from Stoke City in the first game of the FAWNL Cup group stage.

The Old Gold left it late as they netted the winner in added time to complete a 2-1 victory in the cup at SEAH Stadium on Wednesday evening., with goals from Charlotte Greengrass and Amber Hughes, either side of an Emelia Wilson equaliser, securing three points for the hosts in the inaugural group stage game of the competition.

With attention quickly turning to Sunday's crucial clash with promotion rivals Burnley in Telford, McNamara knows the importance another winning performance will have on the season.

On the performance against Stoke

“In the first half, I thought we were tremendous. In the second half, I thought we lost our way a bit, but the girls showed great character.

“The substitutes came on and really changed the game. It shows what we can do with such a superb squad.

“Overall, I felt we really deserved the win.”

On the missed opportunities

“I thought Stoke were good and they were hard to break down. Had we of come away at 1-1, I don’t think I would have seen the funny side of the three, four or five missed opportunities to score at the start of the second half.

“Someone has got to throw their head where it hurts, someone has got to put the ball in the back of the net.

“But as I said, we are delighted to get the three points and start the new cup campaign with a bang.”

On looking ahead to the game against Burnley

“I’ve spoken to the girls and we have just got to go into it and give a good account of ourselves. Everybody knows that Burnley should walk away with this league with the signings that they have made.

“There are some outstanding individuals within that Burnley squad, but we have also got outstanding individuals.”
