Marshall and Grey captured in double swoop

Georgia Marshall and Anna Grey are Wolves Women’s latest summer signings after the former Burnley pair made the move to the Black Country.

Defender Marshall and winger Grey both featured against Wolves for FAWNL Northern Premier Division rivals Burnley last season but have now become Dan McNamara’s second and third new additions to the squad in the last few weeks.

McNamara was delighted to add the duo to his squad as the duo join former Nottingham Forest midfielder Amy Sims in the Old Gold ranks ahead of the 2025/26 season.

He said: “My focus is always to keep as many players as possible within the current squad, and I'm really pleased to say that we've done that, as apart from Tammi, Destiney and Emma, most of last season's squad are going to remain.

"But over the summer we knew we also had to make sure we were strengthening the group, and we’ve managed to do that by bringing Georgia and Anna from Burnley.

“Georgia is a centre-half that we’ve battled with many times over the last five years. She’s played at the top of this league, so we’re really excited to get her in.

“Anna was someone that I’ve been in awe of for the last couple of years. She went across to Burnley last summer and I remember the first outing at Turf Moor, we had to do a lot of work around how we were going to contain her and stop her from showing us her quality.

“She had a difficult second part to last season and probably didn’t get the minutes she would have wanted, but as soon as I knew she was expressing an interest in coming here, we’ve gone out of our way to try and make sure Wolves is the place she wants to play next.”

Marshall joins the club after two years with the Clarets, but her career begun with Leeds United who she represented at youth level. She soon moved to Doncaster Belles at the age of 16, but upon the team’s relegation from the third tier, she remained in Yorkshire as she joined Huddersfield Town.

While with the Terriers, the 22-year-old – who scored her first senior goal against West Bromwich Albion – became one of the team’s key players and even wore the captain’s armband on several occasions.

A move to Turf Moor arrived in the summer of 2023, and Marshall went on to feature 37 times in the last two FAWNL campaigns – scoring three goals – where she was part of a Clarets defence which was the second tightest in the division last season.

McNamara said of the defender’s qualities: “She’s tenacious, she can play, she knows what it takes to win, and we’re delighted to get her over the line. Even at only 22-years-old, she’ll add really good experience in that defence and she’ll add to the competitive side of the back line as well.

“She’s worn the captain’s armband at Huddersfield and she’s worn it at Burnley as well, so she’ll also bring leadership qualities to the group. We’re a young group, but Georgia’s been there and done it, and led some good teams within the National League, so hopefully she can bring some of that experience across to Wolves as she’s a really exciting signing for us.

“Within that market of young, up-and-coming players who’ve got that determination and drive to get to WSL2, she definitely matches up to what we’re after.”

While Grey came through the youth system at Ipswich Town, breaking into the first-team during the 2019/29 season in which was primarily used in cup competitions, but did score three times in eight league appearances.

She was part of an Ipswich team in tier four which mirrored Wolves following the Covid-19 pandemic, with the side being top of their divisions both seasons which were ultimately null-and-void, denying them a championship. However, similarly to her new team, Ipswich were also granted upward movement into the Southern Premier Division.

The now 23-year-old experienced a standout season for the Tractor Girls in 2022/23 as she top-scored for the side with 13 goals, as well as adding another 10 assists, while a move to Burnley arrived last summer which saw the winger score three times in 14 league appearances in claret and blue.

McNamara added: “Anna wants to be on the pitch, that’s where she’s at home, and we’ve had a chat about what areas of the game we want to see from her, what areas of the game she wants to help us improve, and we feel like we can both help each other.

“I think she’ll quickly become a fan favourite as she’s direct, she knows what she wants, she’s got great delivery, a great left foot, so I’m really excited to see her on the pitch and I’m sure she’ll embed herself into the group really well.

“She’s been in and was impressed with everything that we delivered to her. She’s brought into the environment and what we’re trying to achieve, and, again, she’s only a young player at 23, but she’s exactly what we’re after with regards to this group.

“We want hungry, young players, and she’s up there with the finest wingers in the National League, so is certainly in that mould of player that we’re after, and hopefully we can work together for the next few years and take the club to where we all want to go.”
