Katie Johnson has committed her future to Wolves Women with the talented defender signing a contract extension which will keep her at the club for another 12 months.
The childhood Wolves supporter, who is a product of the club’s Regional Talent Centre, was one of the first players to sign contracted terms in Old Gold last summer, and she will now remain part of Dan McNamara’s squad for the 2025/26 season.
Johnson rose through the ranks at Compton Park and into the first-team when she was still only 16 years of age to make her senior debut in January 2019.
Now, the centre-back has moved past 100 appearances for her beloved club and McNamara believes Johnson has the potential to become one of the all-time Wolves Women greats.
“I’m delighted that we get to keep KJ for another 12 months,” McNamara said. “As you would expect, she had a bit of interest over the summer, as she did last summer, and again we’ve done well to keep hold of her for another year.
“She’s been here since she was seven years old, she’s come right the way through the pathway and she’s been on an incredible journey. She’s listened to everything we said to her, she’s been out on loan, she’s done the work away from Wolves, and now we’re seeing just why all that work went into her.
“It’s incredible to think she’s still only 22 years old, so to have already made 100 senior appearances in tier three is a phenomenal achievement. Everyone knows Anna Price currently holds the record, but you’d like to think if KJ was to stay at Wolves, it wouldn’t be out of grasp, so hopefully we can add a lot more to that in the coming years.
“She’s a brilliant person and a fantastic football player, and I’ve no doubt KJ will go on to play within the WSL2 in the future and hopefully that’ll be with Wolves, and she can be part of that journey that takes us onto that dream.”

Since picking up the Players’ Player of the Season award on a special afternoon at Molineux to round out the 2023/24 campaign, Johnson has gone from strength to strength in gold and black.
The defender has become one of the first names on McNamara’s team sheet and even turned down the opportunity of a professional contract with a WSL2 club this summer to remain at Wolves and help the team’s bid for promotion.
“There will be various reasons for why she’s committed,” McNamara explained, “but I think the love she has for Wolves and for this football club is probably the biggest one. Let’s not hide away from the fact she’s Wolves through and through and she’s living the dream of representing the club she supported as a kid.
“I’m sure that had a big impact on why she signed, but we’ve also got to remember that KJ is also a very, very good young football player who will have her own personal ambitions, so it’s important that we don’t just solely rely on her love for the club to keep her here – we’ve also got to meet her ambitions as a football club.
“I’ve told her over the summer what my hopes are for the new season. We want to compete again and see if we can do the impossible. I think that’s also won her over, because she’s a great young player and she’s a massive example to the young girls at the football club.
“Year on year she’s grown, developed and improved, and that’s credit to her and the work she’s done. She’s also captained the team on occasions over the last couple of seasons, which again would have been a dream for her as a kid.
“Hopefully she can keep progressing in the way she has done, as I’ve no doubt she’s going to go on to play in the Super League, and WSL2 at least, at some point, but there’s nothing more KJ would want than to wear the Old Gold in a professional league, so hopefully we can work together to make that happen.”
