Roberts | 'It’s the only place I want to be'

After becoming the latest women’s first-team player to put pen-to-paper on a part-time contract with the club, Beth Roberts insists Wolves was the “only place” she wanted to play her football this season.

The left-back has been a key member of Dan McNamara’s side during the last two-and-a-half years following a move from Stoke City, and by making the “simple” decision to become one of only five Wolves Women players currently contracted to club, Roberts is excited to kick on in the upcoming campaign and help push the team closer to that elusive promotion into tier two.

On signing a contract with Wolves

“I’m absolutely delighted. It’s the place I want to be. All the talks have been going on for next season, so I’m really excited, and it’s looking really promising. With everything that’s going on behind the scenes at the moment, I’m really happy and really excited.

“There was a time that I would never even thought that I’d get a contract for playing football, so it’s definitely an amazing achievement, personally.

“The way the last two seasons have gone at Wolves, the way the team’s grown, I’m just really excited to still be involved in it and definitely excited for the season ahead.”

On feeling at home in gold and black

“Wolves definitely feels like home for me. From the first session, it felt like home. Everyone was so welcoming, and I felt like I got on with the girls and the coaches straight away. So ever since I’ve been here, it’s always felt like home and it’s the only place I want to be.

“That definitely made the decision to sign the contract easier. All throughout the summer, couldn’t have imagined going anywhere else.

“When I think about football and what my future looks like in football, all I think about with that is Wolves.”

On being part of a new era at the club

“It was really hard at the end of the season, for all players and all staff, but ever since then, there’s been such a turnaround.

“All the talks Macca has had with the club have been really positive and he’s always kept all the players in the loop, which has been great. Everything just all sounds really exciting, and it sounds like the club have got great ambition for the women’s team for next season.”

On aims for this season and beyond

“I just want to try and get as many minutes as possible, keep working hard in training, get the fittest I can be over pre-season, and try and help the team to go and win the league.

“I never thought I’d have a contract, so it’s just really special and I think it’s made me realise how serious it is now – at tier three, at this football club – and how much they want the women’s team to do well.

“There is that added pressure, but it just gives you that extra motivation to go and be the best you can.”
