Merrick Will was pleased to secure progression in the Women’s Challenge Cup but felt the frustration of only scoring one goal after creating numerous opportunities in front of goal.
The 1-0 victory at Sutton Coldfield Town confirmed Dan McNamara’s side in the second round but after striking the woodwork five times, Will believes the scoreline should have been much bigger than it was. However, the midfielder has also highlighted the importance of getting the result in the bag ahead of next Sunday’s Black County derby against West Brom.
On the victory
“A bit of a frustrating game, but it’s very important to get through to the next round and focus on West Brom, I think we’re glad that this one is out of the way.”
On Sutton’s determination
“All credit to them, they worked really hard even when they went down to 10. I think there are more points that we are going to focus on individually but, credit to them, they gave us a good game.”
On the half-time message
“It was just that we had to try and build that momentum again. I think we started to pick that up at the end of the first half so we were a bit disappointed to hear the half-time whistle, but it was definitely to pick up the momentum and try and be a bit more clinical. That was the main goal.”
On hitting the woodwork five times
“It was a combination of not being as clinical as we wanted to be and it just not being our day at all in front of goal.
“We definitely created more chances than what we’ve created before so we are a bit disappointed with that. But looking at it positively, we created plenty of chances and we just need to work on putting them away.”
On their determination to retain the cup
“Macca mentioned earlier that there are a few tricky teams in the competition this year that will make it a bit tougher.
“It’s the first time I've been in it so it’s exciting for me, but also for the group it’s a competition that we want to be successful in alongside the league.”
On West Brom next weekend
“There are a few players that I know that have come from where I played last year to join them so they’ll definitely be a threat and it’s a game we want to win.
“We have won quite a few of the derbies consecutively so we will take the positives from today, as well as the negatives. We’ve got some work to do in the week and I'm really looking forward to it, the first derby of the year so hopefully we get the three points.”
