Amber Hughes believes it’s a real positive for the team to have the ability to do both sides of the game.
Wolves Women got their league campaign off to a winning start at Derby County on Sunday, but it was a game of two halves. After going into half-time with a two-goal lead, the Old Gold had to dig in throughout the second half and despite conceding with half an hour to play, managed to hold onto the victory. Hughes, who scored what proved to be the winning goal, was pleased to get off the mark with a sublime solo effort to secure all three points.
On getting off to a winning start
“I think it was a good overall team performance. It’s hard in the first game of the season as you’ve prepped all pre-season in training.
“Ultimately, it comes down to the day and I think we’ve hit the ground running – a 2-1 result.
“At times it was hard because Derby are a good team and they’ll take points off people, but we got the three points so I’m happy with the performance from the girls.”
On opening her account for the campaign
“It’s always pleasing to get on the scoresheet. I want to help the team, but on a personal level it’s nice to get a goal.
“I was running with it and just thought I was going to hit it at the end. I did that and it went in fortunately.”
Amber Hughes is off the mark in style.

On having to dig in throughout the second 45
“They probably had more of the play in the second half, but that’s going to happen in this league.
“We’ll have halves where we dominate and halves where we’re going to have to take it and get on with it.
“It’s credit to the girls that we are able to do that. We’re not necessarily going to dominate games all the time, but when teams do have that spell we know we’re able to get through it.”
On turning to cup action on Sunday
“It’s nice to start the league and then have a little break from it and be at home in the cup.
“Our focus will turn to that and we’ll prep for that before getting back to the league.”
