Wolves Women have bolstered their defensive ranks with the addition of versatile right-back Ellie Wilson.
The 26-year-old becomes Dan McNamara’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Liv Fergusson earlier in the month.
Wilson began her career with Reading and gained promotion as champions to the Women’s Super League in her first season at the club, before joining Bristol City where she was promoted for the second successive campaign in 2016.
The defender then moved onto London Bees and Sheffield United, signing for the latter in 2020, before departing Bramall Lane in May.
McNamara has now secured the signature of Wilson, a former international at youth level for England, and admits she has been a player on his radar for some time.
“Ellie is another player we are bringing into the club with a great pedigree in the women’s game,” McNamara said. “She’s been at a lot of big Championship clubs and started last season as Sheffield United’s first-choice right-back.
“I know she’s suffered from a couple of injuries which saw her not end the season as she would have wanted to, but Ellie’s someone who has been on our radar for quite a while.
“The right-back position is an area on the pitch that we’ve needed to recruit someone into, so to get someone like Ellie, with the experiences, quality and physicality that she has, is a huge coup for the football club.”
Wilson is set to become yet another player within the squad to pull on the Old Gold having grown up with a family of supporters of the club, and McNamara believes the added incentive to play for Wolves is too hard to turn down from an emotional standpoint.
“We’ve had Ellie come into the club and her family – originally from Bridgnorth – are passionate Wolves fans.
“They’ve shown how much they love the football club, so it can be quite a powerful sway to get these kinds of players in. Hopefully Ellie will be another huge signing for us going into the new campaign.”
