Owen Hesketh is focusing on taking the positives, despite defeat on the road at Fulham for Wolves under-21s.
After picking up a draw and victory from their Easter weekend round of fixtures, James Collins’ side were looking to take points off last season’s division two title winners. However, despite a promising and dominant second half performance, Luke Harris’ goal 13 minutes from time condemned the old gold to defeat at Motspur Park. Hesketh, who scored a well-deserved leveller for Wolves, has admitted it was disappointing to lose, but has taken plenty of encouragement from the overall display heading into the final two games of the season.
On being narrowly beaten
“The mood in the dressing room is a disappointing one. We were probably the better team today I thought, especially in the second half.
“I thought we came out and played well and we’re all disappointed to not come away with anything from the game.
“It’s not nice to lose to a set-piece as well. You’d rather lose to a great bit of play by getting cut open or something like that.
“I think we should’ve defended it better and the first goal we got hit on the counter. All the lads are disappointed so we’re going to have to try and pull back together, get a few points and try and stay in the league.”
On being on top in the second half
“We came in at half-time and in the second half we wanted to get after them more. We started to jump the wingers onto the centre halves, press in their half and try and pin them in – I thought we did that and they struggled for the first 10/15 minutes.
“We were on top and then we got the goal back. We’re devastated not to get more and push on from that goal.
“It looked like there was only going to be one team going on to win it and that was us, I thought after the equaliser. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day today, they got one and won the game.”
On his goal
“I’ve been playing deeper this season, but I think I can get into the box and score a few goals.
“It was a great ball in from Owen Farmer and I just drifted round the back. It fell to me and I thought I took it well, put my foot through it and luckily it went into the bottom corner.”
On taking the positives
“There’s a lot of positives from the game. Even though we did lose, we can look at those positives.
“It’s not like we’re going into the last two games of the season on a real low – we did play really well.
“I think we can go and get some points from these next two games and hopefully stay up.”
