Sharps | 'We dropped our standards'

Ian Sharps couldn’t hide his disappointment following the under-21s defeat at West Ham United on Monday evening.

The old gold fell behind inside half an hour, but were back on level terms at the half-time interval. However, two goals inside the final nine minutes condemned Wolves to defeat at the Rush Green Stadium. The task in hand was made tougher with forced changes throughout the night due to injuries, coupled with the team struggling to find their form of previous weeks.

On the performance

“It was disappointing tonight. I think we’ve dropped our standards from where they’ve been in the last few weeks.

“We need to get back on the horse as quick as we can really. I was disappointed with us on the ball – we didn’t work hard enough to receive passes, make angles or play forward. We went backwards far too much.”

On losing players through injury

“The injury situation didn’t help, I think we lost three through injury. It’s not ideal and they’re quite big players for us as well.

“We had to look at making changes and playing players who haven’t played many minutes as well. A bit of rustiness was probably there, but we wanted to do better than that. It was a great opportunity to come here tonight and make a good show of ourselves.”

On the message at half-time

“At half-time I said they were doing ok, but ok doesn’t win you football matches. We needed to step it up and I didn’t feel we did in the second half.

“We needed to play forward more, play in their half more, run more, have better touches and we didn’t quite do it.”

On the goals conceded

“I couldn’t really see the penalty if I’m honest. It looked a bit harsh from afar – someone smashing a ball at you and then giving a penalty.

“For the last one, we gave the ball away in our own box and they took advantage of it. I’d prefer us to be brave, play forwards and make things happen rather than just play backwards all the time.

“We are going to make mistakes when we’re trying to play out, but we need to be better at that.”

On the league campaign to date

“If you look at the 12 games as a whole, they’ve done reasonably well. There have been a few defeats in there, but I think there have been some good performances as well.

“The staff and the players should be happy with how they’ve performed over 12 games, but this last game we wanted more than we did today.”

On having to utilise the squad

“It’s tough when you haven’t played for a bit and you’re a bit rusty. I do understand it’s hard for them to hit the ground running and we probably had too many of them on the pitch at the same time. The injuries dictated that and hurt us a little bit.

“We’ve got two games coming up on Friday and Monday. The squad will have to be used well and there are a few lads doing well in the 18s, so they might get a good chance.

“We’ll see what the medical team say. They do a great job to help the team, so hopefully they’ll patch a few up and we’ll be alright for Friday.”
