U21 preview | Shrewsbury vs Wolves

The Papa John’s Trophy takes centre stage on Tuesday evening as Wolves under-21s travel to Shrewsbury Town.

James Collins’ side open their Group C campaign against the League One outfit, who currently sit 20th in their respective league standings.

A steady return to PL2 Division One has seen Wolves pick up six points from their opening four matches and they now go head-to-head with EFL opposition in the first of their three group games.

The youngsters were unfortunate to be on the losing side at Crystal Palace last Friday, despite playing the majority of the second-half with 10 men. A point looked to have been secured before Palace struck deep into added time to snatch the victory.

Salop have collected six points from as many matches in the third tier this season, with their sole success coming away at Wycombe Wanderers – Steve Cotterill’s men come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers on the weekend.

Shrewsbury were 3-1 victors over Wolves under-21s in the same competition last season, as the old gold exited with two points in the group stage.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Port Vale and Stockport County face off in the other Group C fixture at Vale Park.

WHAT THE BOSS THINKS

It’s going to be a really tough game. They’re always the hardest games of the season and we’ll really find stuff out about them on Tuesday night which is great.

“It won’t be academy football where they overplay. There’s a direction to it and they’ll try and get to the goal more often. Sometimes academy football can be very technical and maybe less physical. The Papa John’s Trophy games are equally as technical but more physical – the boys must handle that.

“In my experience at the club, we’ve fared well in the games, so we’ll look forward to the challenge and see how they respond.”
