Lopez | 'It has to be the standard'

Fer Lopez has called on Wolves to make last Saturday’s performance the standard ahead of two away games in the space of four days this week.

The Old Gold put three without reply past Cardiff City to make it back-to-back wins on home soil at the weekend, and now Lopez, who netted the first against the Bluebirds, wants a similar approach when heading to Bristol City on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old sat out of the win over Watford to recover from a minor niggle, but felt back to his best against Cardiff, and wants Wolves to sign off for the next international break in a positive frame of mind again.

On Saturday setting the standard

“It has to, especially against those types of teams at home, we need to show from the first minute that we want to win, and not only win, we want to dominate. I think we showed that in the first half.

“I think performances like this, especially at home, are the type of performances we have to focus on. We have to analyse what we did well and try to repeat it. But I think it’s all about mentality and we’re improving that side now.”

On another win at Molineux

“I think in the first 20 minutes, we were much better than them. They were going man-to-man, and we had the quality to get away from our markers. After that, it’s easier because you’ve got the advantage. We just kept creating chances, and we knew we were going to score.

“When we scored the first one, we had to try to get more and more. After going 2-0 up, we have to keep going. You can’t always do it, but I think we showed that. We fell off a little bit in the second half after going 3-0 up, I think we were a bit complacent, but it’s important to keep pushing after you score.”

On benefiting from a rest

“I was happy to get some rest in the last game because I was injured a bit, but on Saturday I felt much better, back to my best, I think. Sometimes I just need a little bit of rest because I’m not used to playing so many games, but I’m happy to help the team.

“For me especially, coming back from injury after being with the national team, it was important. I just needed some rest. We had a couple of days off, which was good to clear my head a bit. I think that’s very important. But I need to get used to playing twice a week again because that’s what this league requires.”

On the relentless schedule

“There are so many games and in this league you have to be 100 per cent physically because otherwise it’s so difficult to compete. There are so many good players, and it’s very physical, so it’s really important. Like before the last international break, we need to focus on that and try to finish strongly.”
