Hugo Bueno says this group has drawn a line under last season’s disappointment and feels fresh and ready to put things right.
The Spaniard was speaking after the first official friendly of the summer – a 1-0 win at Maidenhead United on Wednesday evening – and explained how things are building nicely ahead of the Championship kick off next month.
While aware of the further improvements needed, Bueno said it was important to get that winning feeling again and is hungry for more as pre-season continues against Spanish opposition at the weekend.
On the mood in the camp changing
“It’s a new season, so everything starts from zero. We put everything to one side and we just start again. We are fresh and we know what we have to do, we have our objective, we know exactly what it is, and we just have to go for it.
“It makes everything clear for everyone. We have to get together every training, every match with this in mind, it’s really important, and then build a good mentality. We have new players as well, everything’s fresh, everything’s new, so it looks good.”
On back playing with fans
“It was really nice to see the fans again and also start with a win. It wasn’t easy today with the conditions, but we got through it and it was important for fitness to get 45 minutes in. I enjoyed it, of course. It was not easy, but it was nice.
“It’s always nice to win, it’s a great start and we have to keep going like this. We are still building a lot of things, it’s the first stage, but the team and every player is getting there, which is really nice.”

On Wednesday’s performance
“It was good, we have to keep being positive always. There were things to improve, we know that, but there were a lot of positives in there. We are playing well and building great things, so we have to keep pushing.
“The manager made it really clear what he wants, with and without the ball. We have to get that information on the pitch and sometimes it can be a bit difficult, but we are going to get there for sure – he’s doing a really good job with all of us.
“The first two weeks [of pre-season] were not easy – really, really tough, but we needed this to try to perform today and also we have another game on Saturday, and we have to keep going.”
On a Spanish test next
“I can’t wait to put ourselves against really good opponents, to see how we are, and it will be a good test. It’s always special [playing Spanish teams], they are a really good team, we know that, so I can’t wait.”
