Raul Jimenez makes his Molineux return

Wolves have completed the re-signing of legendary striker Raul Jimenez, bringing one of the most iconic players in the club’s modern history back to Molineux.

The Mexican returns to Wolves on a two-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months, having already secured his place among the best forwards to represent the Old Gold in history, and the greatest in the club’s Premier League era.

During his first spell in gold and black between 2018 and 2023, Jimenez scored 57 goals in 166 appearances, helping transform Wolves from a newly-promoted outfit into one of English football’s most feared teams.

Signed initially on loan from Benfica following promotion into the Premier League, Jimenez quickly became the focal point of Nuno Espirito Santo’s thrilling side.

His goals fired Wolves to a seventh-place Premier League finish in his debut season in England, before an even more remarkable campaign followed in 2019/20. That term, the Old Gold’s number nine scored 27 goals in all competitions as Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League and challenged for Champions League qualification.

But Jimenez’s influence on the club extended far beyond goals. His resilience following the serious head injury he suffered against Arsenal in 2020 and the determination he showed to battle back to his best, only strengthened the admiration fans held for him.

Jimenez was the focal point of the Wolves side which competed fearlessly against England’s elite, and was at the forefront of the most memorable performances, while his love for Wolverhampton and the city forged an extraordinary connection with supporters.

Now, after three productive seasons in the capital with Fulham, Jimenez returns to the club where he became a Premier League star.

The Mexican will also be reunited with his beloved number nine shirt after the club’s current nine, Adam Armstrong, was happy to vacate the number upon hearing of Jimenez’s return.

As the club celebrates its 150th anniversary, Jimenez’s Molineux homecoming is more than a transfer, but the return of a player whose name will forever be woven into the fabric of this historic football club.

Executive chairman Nathan Shi said: “Being able to bring Raul back to Wolves is a truly special moment for everyone connected with this football club.

“Raul is not only one of the finest strikers to ever pull on our gold and black shirt, but he is a player who embodies everything that define Wolves.

“He has provided unforgettable contributions to the club, and helped create some of the greatest memories in our recent history, and we know how much of a hero he remains to our supporters, so we are delighted to welcome him back home to Molineux, especially during our 150th anniversary year.”

Head coach Rob Edwards knows the pull of returning to Molineux was too much for Jimenez to turn down. “We’re delighted that Raul’s here and I know everyone will be very excited,” Edwards said.

“He’s another player with huge experience, but also knows Wolverhampton, he knows the area, knows the club, knows the DNA and the fabric of it, and knows what it means to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers. It’s going to be so much easier for me to be able to demand what I’m going to demand of the players, because he’s lived it, he knows the levels, so I’m very, very pleased.

“I was at the club when he was here before so was able to watch him and see what he did for this football club. Raul was a big part of our greatest times for a number of years. I know what he means to the football club and to the supporters, but this is not just an emotional signing. This is a signing because we really believe that he’s the right man to be able to help us achieve our aims, so we’re delighted to have him in.”

Matt Jackson, technical director, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to bring Raul back to Wolves, and I think many of our fans will be as well. They’ve certainly played their part with the reaction they gave him during the Fulham game recently, and it’s going to be unbelievable to see him back leading the line for us.

“Nathan deserves huge credit for getting this deal over the line as there were other offers on the table for Raul to take, but Nathan understands how much of a hero Raul is to the supporters, and he was determined to do everything possible to bring him back to Molineux.

“But this is not just about a legend coming back, it’s the on-pitch quality that we are looking for, and Raul brings that for us in huge amounts, and that is the main priority of this signing. But also, to see him out there at Molineux and scoring in front of the South Bank once again, will just be amazing for everybody.”
