Edwards | 'I thought we looked brilliant in the second half'

Rob Edwards was pleased with the way his Wolves side fought back from two goals down to claim a point away at Brentford but left frustrated that his players weren’t able to snatch all three.

The game could have been out of sight before half time for the Bees who had several opportunities to add to the pair of goals they put past Jose Sa’s goal before the Old Gold struck back before half time through Adam Armstrong’s first for the club and Tolu Arokodare’s equaliser in a second half which the visitors dominated.

Despite the character and fight his players displayed once again to continue to fight in spite of their current status at the bottom of the Premier League standings, Edwards believes his team could have gone into their almost four-week break without a game off the back of a third successive Premier League victory.

On fighting back for a point

“I’m a bit mixed. It’s strange to say it when you’ve been two-nil down, but the feeling is a little bit like, ‘Maybe those are a couple of points that got away’.

“But overall, the performance was brilliant and I’m really proud of the players for showing the fight, the courage, the belief and the quality then to get back in the game.”

On remaining confident when two goals down

“I think we were playing well anyway. There were a couple of mistakes that we had made – we didn’t defend the cross well, we didn’t stop the cross, we didn’t defend the cross – and that was something we’d been speaking about all week with Brentford’s threat as they’re really effective with that.

“That’s why they’re a good team. They can play short, but then if you press and step on, they can go over and that was really frustrating. But we felt that we were in the game. We were playing well.

“I thought we had really good moments, we were taking control, but the goal before half time gave everyone that bit of belief. We’re only one behind, we’re playing well, and we can get back in this.

“We didn’t need at half-time to change too much, just a little bit of personnel, but we didn’t have to change too much tactically, just reinforce a few messages, and I thought we looked brilliant in the second half.”

On Armstrong’s performances

“He’s done really well for us and the teams that we’ve played, it’s been really hard for him to create chances recently, but he’s been working so hard for the team.

“He’s selfless and I know for strikers it’s all about the goals for them, but he’s also someone that will work incredibly hard for the team, so he really deserves that and I’m really pleased for him.”

On the impact of the substitutes

“He’s [Mane’s] fine, I just thought it maybe wasn’t his night tonight, and that Angel could really affect it, which he did.

“But I thought all the subs came on and affected the game really well – Tolu got his goal, Angel, Rodrigo, I thought they all had an effect.”

On the work he’s put into the team

“There’s more confidence now. I think we look fitter and stronger, and we look like we’re capable now of competing and running, and then competing and running in the second half, and continuing to get stronger as well.

“It’s been a lot of hard work that we had to go through, some pain, to get to this stage, and it’s hard because of where we are, but I feel we look like a Premier League team now.”

On remaining motivated despite being bottom

“I’d like to think we’re being consistent with the message that we’re talking about, the way we’re trying to live day-to-day, but when you’re playing in the Premier League, and when you perform in the Premier League, it’s going out everywhere.

“The lads know whether they’re playing for themselves, their families, their World Cup place, whatever it is, whatever their motivation is, you have to perform – whether you want to be here next year or not.

“That’s just the reality of it, and that’s what we’re saying a lot, and they’re finding that motivation. Whatever it is, I want them to keep showing it and keep showing the quality and the fight that they are. That’s really important.”

On having a 24-day break before facing West Ham

“I’ve got no doubt that we’ll keep that attitude and motivation. We can’t guarantee that we’re going to win every game or get points in every game, but we’ll guarantee that we’re going to fight and show that desire and quality.

“They’ll get a few days off now because it’s such a long break and I feel like they deserve that as well.

“The ones that don’t go on international duty we’ll get a good couple of weeks of training with them and we’ll get a friendly in there as well to make sure we prepare properly for the West Ham game, which is obviously a really big one for us.”
