Santi Bueno wins first Player of the Month award

Santi Bueno’s impressive Wolves performances throughout February have earned the defender his first SUDU Player of the Month award.

The Uruguayan has become a key member of the team under Rob Edwards after tying down the centre of the back three position with a succession of commanding displays, culminating in the Wolves supporters naming him their best player for last month.

Bueno, who is aiming to be named among his country’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup this summer, has done his chances of being on the plane to North America no harm with his recent performances in gold and black, as he played every minute possible during February.

Following a 3-1 defeat at home to Chelsea to kick off the month, the centre-back was part of a defence which kept Nottingham Forest at bay and came out with a clean sheet despite the Tricky Trees posing 35 shots at the Old Gold’s goal.

Four days later, Bueno starred at both ends of the pitch as Wolves overcame the banana skin FA Cup fourth round visit to Grimsby. Having notched his third goal of the season to put his side ahead in the second half of the throwback cup tie, Bueno then produced an incredible last-ditch sliding challenge inside his penalty area in the final minutes of the match to deny the League Two side a late equaliser.

His rich run of form continued into the following midweek as Santi was a standout performer – alongside his namesake Hugo – as Wolves fought back from two goals down to secure a point at home to Premier League champions Arsenal, setting up his fellow Bueno for the first of Wolves’ goals.

Bringing solidity and consistency to the Wolves defence as he mops up the danger inside his penalty area, Beuno produced the most clearances of anyone on the pitch in the West Midlands derby win over Aston Villa, while also making vital tackles in interceptions to secure his team’s only second league victory of the season.

For his efforts in February, Bueno received the most votes from the public vote on the Wolves App, beating Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes to the award, and was handed his trophy at Compton Park earlier today.
