Rob Edwards is delighted with the way his players continue to fight against the odds after claiming a second Premier League win in succession to down reigning champions Liverpool at Molineux.
The Old Gold snatched a late three points thanks to Andre’s deflected effort after Rodrigo Gomes put Wolves ahead, which closed the gap to the teams above them in the Premier League standings.
With Liverpool set to come back to Molineux on Friday night for an FA Cup fifth round clash, Edwards is urging his players to replicate their performance and carry on their positive momentum.
On three points against Liverpool
“It’s not great for my heart, but I certainly could get used to it. It’s a really good feeling. I thought in the early parts of the game we showed some really good moments with the ball.
“We got through them a few times, and Liverpool started to get more control as the half wore on, so we weren’t able to get as much of the ball as we would have liked.
“But that’s Liverpool's quality, and there’s areas there for us to try and work on, improve in, but then nil-nil at half time, which is where we wanted it to be – well, we’d loved to have been winning – but we wanted to be in the game, because we felt then that we could improve, we could grow into it and that’s how we’ve been generally in the second half anyway, it’s the way our games have been going.
“There is more pressure on the opposition, they start to open up, and it leaves a few more spaces, and that’s how it went.”
On the togetherness in the group
“It is confidence, but it’s a work rate thing as well. It’s taken a while and with results people will notice more, but it’s taken a while to realise how hard you got to work to get anything from a game of football, especially at this level.
“There’s just a stark difference now between when we came in to now with the level of fight and work that the lads are showing. We’ve obviously got a really small squad at the moment, but everyone’s together, everyone’s in it together. Everyone feels like they’re not too far away.
“I know we’ve got a couple of younger ones who haven’t had as many minutes as they would have liked, but I think everyone’s involved, especially with everyone fit at the moment. It’s great.
“We’ve got a tight group that are fighting for each other, working hard, and showing that we’re not maybe as bad as people would have thought.”

On celebrating the winning goal
“It’s Liverpool, they’re an amazing football club, champions last year, and these moments, we’ve got to enjoy them.
“Again, I lost myself with a 93rd minute winner, but we have to enjoy these moments. We’ve had a lot of dark times this year, the supporters have had that as well, so it’s nice that they can sing a little bit about stuff at the moment.”
On planning for two games in three days
“It was a bit of both. We had a plan, but until you get hit in the face, then you might have to change things. The timings of the substitutions in the second half, that wasn’t the plan. I had an idea of who I might want to try and get on the pitch, but then it was about finding a way to win the game.
“It’s hard in the heat at the moment to try and stick to a, ‘Let’s give him 30 minutes and him whatever’. Then it was just about winning, but the impact from the subs were great, and the lads that started the game were really good as well.”

On players showing fighting spirit
“It’s difficult, especially the teams we’re going up against, because we’re not playing the way I want to be able to play. We’re showing characteristics of what I want my teams to be able to have, but we’re having to find a way at the moment – which is understandable.
“I think everyone would appreciate that. We know Liverpool are ahead of us, we know Villa are ahead of us, but the characteristics that the team are showing, that’s where I want it to be.”
On fans prioritising the cup game
“I’ve probably made them quite angry now, so we’ll see. But we had to just go one at a time and I said before Villa that we want to try and win every game.
“We know how hard it is to do that, we saw how good Liverpool are tonight, and I know we had to ride our luck at times and everything, and little things went for us tonight, but what we’ll do is recover, try and pick a team that will win a cup game.
“It’s going to be a really exciting night for us on Friday night – does it have to be one or the other? We’ll try and win both.”
