Edwards | 'There’s a good energy around the place'

Rob Edwards is hoping Wolves can continue the momentum they’ve built up during their recent three-game unbeaten run when they travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Despite sitting at the bottom of the Premier League standings, the Old Gold continue to fight until the end, which they displayed in midweek by coming back from two goals down against current leaders Arsenal to put a dent in the Gunners’ Premier League title hopes.

After Edwards kicked off his spell in the Molineux dugout against Palace earlier this season, the head coach heads to south London excited to test himself up against Oliver Glasner and reunite with Jorgen Strand Larsen, after the Norwegian made the move to Selhurst Park just a few weeks ago.

On Wednesday’s draw with Arsenal

“A lot more was more made of it on the outside than on the inside. I know it’s top vs bottom and with all due respect to them, we went into the game believing that we could do something and achieve something. I don’t want to over celebrate it because in the end, it was only a point, but it was a good one, and it was a good performance.

“The attitudes right and there’s a feeling amongst the lads that we’re improving, building more of an understanding and we’re certainly working harder, there’s clear evidence of that, which is important. There’s lots of good things, but there’s still things we’re getting wrong.

“The two goals were disappointing for us to concede, there was elements in the first half where we were too loose in possession and gave them too much, too many turnovers, and allowed them to build too much pressure. There are things that we’re not getting right, but there was a lot to like about the performance.”

On Tom Edozie’s debut goal

“He’s been really good. He was smiling again this morning in training and he had a nice spring in his step. He’s trained well with us the last week or two and we’re still getting to know him ourselves. But it was a really nice story for him.

“I thought his finish was excellent, keeping it down low in that kind of pressurized moment, with people coming out to charge on him. It was a brilliant finish and a brilliant moment for him.

“He’s still got a long way to go. He’s had an amazing moment, but he’s got really knuckle down and keep knuckling down and keep working and make sure he stays in and around the squad. But it’s a really good story.”

On bringing through Wolves’ young talent

“We’ve got a strong academy here. We’ve got loads of people who put heck of a lot of work into our younger players and are doing a really good job. You talk about those two, and I think there’s others as well. It’s nice for some of the youngsters over in the academy building to see it and to see it is possible with a lot of hard work and perseverance. It probably gives them a little bit of inspiration over there.

“Any football club that I’m involved in, the academy’s got to be an important part. Whether players are playing or in the matchday squad or not, they’re still playing a big part, because we’ll be using the young lads in training quite a lot, so they can have a big part of the working week.

“But if you can produce one or two players a season, which is big, big pressure, and which is hard to do, then obviously you’re doing incredible work. We’d love nothing more for that to be the case going forward, but the pressures on young ones, because they’ve got to be good enough.

“You can’t just hand debuts out or appearances out. But a lot of my coaching staff have been in the development pathways and have developed young players, and nothing would please us more than to keep doing that, but it’s down to those young lads to try and make it up here and knock on the door, do well in training and impress us.”

On the spirit at Compton Park

“I feel like we’ve been competing well anyway, so there’s a good energy around the place, but certainly it was a nice way to finish the game the other day, and the feeling was really good in the dressing room.

“But we want to try and continue that, and bottle that up. They were two very different performances, the Grimsby game and the Arsenal game, but we got good results and we showed a lot of good character in both.

“That’s something that we’re going to need in abundance going forward, especially down here, but going forward for the rest of the season.”

On Angel Gomes’ injury

“It’s good. I think his back locked up and he had a spasm, but he’s trained today. They’re all right, there’s a few walking wounded and there’s a few that we’ve got to check on and see how they are tomorrow.

“We’ve got a tight squad now, and we’ve got to try and look after everyone in between these games as well, especially with them coming thick and fast as they are, but the vast majority of the group are in good nick.

“Toti’s trained today, so he’s had a couple of training sessions with the group, so that’s good news for us.”

On facing Glasner’s Crystal Palace side

“They’re good and they’re playing in Europe for a reason, because they’re a good team. I said it before my first game in charge here that Oliver Glasner is a brilliant manager, he’s done an incredible job, and they’ve got loads of good players, so it’ll be a really difficult game – as usual.

“We’re away from home and they always make it a difficult place to go, because there’s a good atmosphere there, but we’re looking forward to it. They’ve got a really good identity, so you know what to expect, but stopping that is another thing.

“He’s won a major trophy and for that football club, that’s incredible. It was a historic moment for them. But they play a really good brand of football. They’ve got some exciting players, and he’s got the most out of them.

“I think that’s our job as coaches, to try and get the most out of players and there’s a really good level of organisation there. They play a good way of attacking football, and they can go toe-to-toe with anybody. He’s done a fantastic job.”

On reuniting with Strand Larsen

“I’m looking forward to seeing him, even though we’ve only just said goodbye. He’s a good man, he’s a good person, and he’s a very good footballer.

“In life, you’re never going to be able to please everybody, but I think he can look himself in mirror and say he gave everything, he worked very hard, and that’s all that matters.”
