Rodrigo Gomes was delighted to have marked his return from injury by netting in Wolves’ 6-1 FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Molineux.
The Portuguese has been absent since undergoing surgery on a groin injury in October, but after fighting back to fitness, the wide man came off the bench to score his side’s fifth on a positive afternoon in the cup.
And although Gomes revealed how difficult the last few months have been to not be in a position to help the team through a tough period, he cannot wait to make up for lost time and ensure Wolves maintain their impressive start to 2026.
On scoring on his return from injury
“It was a perfect return. It was a good goal. Fer did a very good shot which hit the post, and then Tolu found me inside of the box and I was fast to react. It was a good goal and I was very happy when the ball touched the net.
“But it was a big win, a good win, six goals, and my return from injury. There’s been some tough moments for me with my injury and the surgery, but although it was a hard moment, the staff did everything they could for me.
“They always pushed me and helped me to return. And this return was unbelievable, with the goal, so I’m very happy, but now we’ve got to keep going.”
On missing the last three months
“It’s been a difficult time to be watching from the stands, not being able to help the team, but every player doesn’t like to be injured, and of course I wanted to help the team.
“It was a tough moment and it’s been very, very difficult and I was sad, of course, but since the first day after the surgery, I did everything in my capacity to return as fast as possible.
“The staff did a very good job with me, and that’s why I’ve been able to come back like this. I’m feeling very good, I’m feeling sharp and feeling fit. Of course, scoring goal is an unbelievable return, so I’m very, very happy.”
On getting back fit
“I’m feeling very good, but we need to be careful. We need to take it step by step. For me, in this game, I wanted to play the 90 minutes, but I can’t do that and you need to be step by step.
“But I’m feeling very good, I’m feeling fit and without pain, that’s the most important thing, so I’m feeling very happy.”

On going four games unbeaten
“Winning games and not losing games brings happiness. I think everyone could see that on the pitch the lads are doing an amazing job now.
“Four games unbeaten is very good, and now we need to keep working and on Sunday we need to keep doing that. It should be a good game for us, at home with our fans, so I think we could do a very good result.”
On reaching the fourth round
“It’s a very important competition. The FA Cup is a big competition and we want to go further and as far as possible. We want to win every game.
“But let’s take it step by step, game by game. Now we have enjoyed this win, we will focus on Newcastle and then in the next round of the FA Cup, we will see what happens next.”
