Krejci | 'The last game can be a big example'

Ladislav Krejci feels Wolves’ second half performance against Chelsea on Wednesday evening has given the squad the confidence they need to help turn their Premier League season around.

The Czech Republic international has been a key part of the Old Gold side since his arrival from Girona in August, having settled in well at Molineux.

And with Wolves still awaiting their first win of the campaign as they head to Fulham on Saturday afternoon, Krejci is confident the elusive three points are going to come soon, especially if the side play the way they did when they came so close to staging a miraculous fightback after the break of their Carabao Cup tie against the Cottagers’ near neighbours earlier this week.

On settling in at Wolves

“I’m enjoying it a lot. For me, it’s been a big step and a big change compared to my past club, and I’m so glad I came here.

“I don’t know what others are thinking or what they think about me, but from my perspective, from the club’s perspective, from the staff’s perspective, all the time I try to give the best from myself, the best that I can do for the team and for the team’s tactics.

“I like the style of the Premier League a lot. I like the mix between the playing style and the hard play style – a lot of tackles, a lot of duals, but also try to be as comfortable on the ball as I can and find the football situation to go to the opponent team.

“This is what football means to me, and this is what I like in football and what gives me the passion and the motivation. Everywhere I am, whether it’s on a football pitch, outside the pitch – everywhere, I know I am representing myself, my family, my club and my nation, so I’m just trying to do my best. I try to put everything out of me, so what I can do on the pitch is to help the team and help everyone.”

On remaining confident

“Of course I believe. I think the last game [against Chelsea] can be a big example for it. It also shows us as players a little bit of how it can be and how it can’t be, what our levels are and what we have to do to change this momentum because the second half was amazing from everyone. You saw with the first goal, the second goal, the third goal.

“But from the moment we could start [the second half], it was like everybody was on one boat, and these are the things that we can change and take it into the next games, and change this momentum and these situations.”

On goals Wolves are conceding

“One of the points for me in these situations is that we know some of the goals we’ve conceded happened a little bit in the same way, so in these moments, we need to be a little bit more clever and read these situations a little bit faster.

“But like I said in the last question, if we buy the puzzle of this, we can make the right picture.”

On developing throughout his career

“In the big football world, the Czech league is not that big, and we cannot compete with the top five leagues in Europe, but Sparta is a big club and it’s something that you can compare into your life.

“If I’m here or somewhere else, the pressure I had at Sparta was massive because you are in the biggest club in your country, and you need to win every game. If you’re in a bad period, you need to get out of it very fast. If not, you need to work on it every day, to get out of it.

“So I’ve had lots of ups and downs, which in the bigger picture means nothing, but when you are in that moment, you try to do everything to make it right. You learn a lot in these moments and I’m learning a lot, as a human being, as a person, as a footballer, but every moment, at every club, whether it was Brno, Sparta and after at Girona, we needed to go through a lot of periods, including Champions League, and times of not winning games in the second half of the seasons.

“But these are things that you go through, and you are learning and watching what you can do better. It doesn’t matter on which level you are, it’s up to you how you see it and how you can use it in the future.”

On wearing the 37 shirt

“I wear 37 because when I went to Sparta, they had 36 titles. Sparta is one of the biggest clubs in the Czech Republic, with the most trophies throughout the whole of history, and I came into the team at a time when the team and the club didn’t have too many good times, I think they went five years without a trophy.

“When I was choosing my number, I said, ‘Ok, I will be the one who will bring the 37th title’, and it’s stuck with me. It’s also a way I can take the club with me and the Sparta fans with me.

“I enjoy this number a lot, especially with what happened after with the 37th title, as well as the 38th, both as captain, so that was amazing.”

On his love of golf

“I only started to play just one year ago, when I first went to Girona, because a lot of players live on the golf course, and I had the starting hole maybe about 20 metres from my house. With my very good friend and neighbour, Daley Blind, we played every two or three days together and did a few holes, and it was a big passion for me there.

“But I’ve stopped playing now because there’s not too much time to play, and I’m not living on the golf course like I was in Girona, so it’s a bit harder to find the time. But it’s 100% one of the sports that I will do when I have a day off and after my career finishes.”
