Gomes | 'This is a very important match'

Joao Gomes says the importance of getting a first three points of the season on Saturday isn’t lost on the Wolves squad.

The Brazilian has been typically industrial in the heart of Vitor Pereira’s midfield this season, but knows Wolves need to produce more if they’re to get up and running for points against Leeds United this weekend.

Gomes, who was voted Player of the Season by supporters last season, knows those on the Molineux terraces will be with the team from the off, and says now it’s on the players to give the 2025/26 season a kickstart.

On turning a poor start around

“We didn't start well, but I think we need continue to work hard each day together. This is a very hard match, but I think we’ll play well. We need to play more with the ball and we need to make easier passes, switching the sides.

“I am 100 per cent motivated because this is a very important match at home [on Saturday]. We have zero points, so it’s important for us to win – it’s the most important match of the season [so far].”

On working with Pereira and his new signings

“He’s a very good gaffer and he helped me a lot. Not just me, but all the players. I’ll do everything I can do to help him, to put Wolves up the table.

“I’ve connected with [Jhon] Arias because he played in Brazil and, now he’s come to us, he’s such a good player, and I think he will help us a lot. He’s very good in small spaces and this is so important for us.”

On being Player of the Season last term

“I can't find the words to thank the supporters, for everything the Wolves supporters have done for me and all the players. Everything we do, and everything I’ve done so far, is thanks to the supporters.

“I really appreciate what they’ve done, they’ve been helpful, they’ve been there for us during the hard times and the good times, not just for the players, but for the staff and the club. I can’t find the words to say how thankful I am.”
