Internationals | Colombia and Uruguay book World Cup spots

It was four wins from four for Wolves’ international contingent on Thursday evening as the September international period got off to a positive start for the Old Gold represented nations.

Jhon Arias and Yerson Mosquera’s Colombia, Santi Bueno’s Uruguay and Jackson Tchatchoua’s Cameroon all tasted victory in their World Cup qualification campaigns last night – with all three games ending in 3-0 wins, while David Moller Wolfe’s Norway were victorious in a friendly clash.

With several other Wolves players set for international action over the coming days, wolves.co.uk rounds-up all the action featuring Vitor Pereira’s squad so far in this jam-packed week.

David Moller Wolfe | Norway 1-0 Finland

The only game featuring a Wolves player on Thursday night to not end 3-0 came in a European friendly as Wolfe put in a stellar performance at left-back to keep a clean sheet in Norway’s 1-0 victory over neighbours Finland. In from the start to earn his 13th cap for his country, Wolfe played the opening 78 minutes for Norway, who took the lead early on through Erling Haaland. That was how the scoreline stayed as Stale Solbakken’s side secured the win to get September off to a good start ahead of their World Cup qualification clash with Moldova on Tuesday (9th September, 7.45pm).

Jhon Arias & Yerson Mosquera | Colombia 3-0 Bolivia

Having already picked up 22 points from their opening 16 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, Colombia knew a positive result in their home game with Bolivia would secure their place in next summer’s World Cup in North America. Wolves’ summer signing Arias was named in the starting line-up once again, playing in the middle of the three forwards supporting striker Jhon Cordoba, while Mosquera was not named in the matchday squad as he continues his steady injury recovery. Arias played the first hour for his country, as Colombia eased past Bolivia to book their place in the 2026 World Cup with a game to spare, which comes on Wednesday (10th September, 12.30am) away to Venezuela.

Santi Bueno | Uruguay 3-0 Peru

As part of the 3-0 wins for Wolves’ South American contingent in the early hours of Friday morning saw Bueno and his Uruguay side also book their place in next summer’s World Cup. The defender had to settle for a place on the bench as his country comfortably overcame the challenge of the Peruvians to move up to third in the CONMEBOL standings with one game remaining. With their World Cup spot now confirmed, Bueno will be hoping Marcelo Bielsa rings the changes for the final qualification game on Wednesday (12.30am KO) as Uruguay travel to face Chile.

Jackson Tchatchoua | Cameroon 3-0 Eswatini

Last night also saw Tchatchoua enjoy a home 3-0 victory with his country, but like Bueno, the defender was also an unused substitute as Cameroon took a step closer to the World Cup. With 12 points from their opening six qualification matches in CAF Group D, Cameroon maintained their one-point gap to group leaders Cape Verde with three games remaining. Only the eight group winners from African qualification are guaranteed a place at next summer’s World Cup, with the four best runners up going into a play-off where one victor will take the ninth and final spot, which means Tuesday’s (5pm) qualifier away in Cape Verde will be crucial to Cameroon’s chances.

Coming up

Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa will both be hoping to be part of Zimbabwe’s squad for their World Cup qualifier against Benin on Friday evening (5pm), while Emmanuel Agbadou and Ivory Coast will be looking at closing the gap to Gabon at the top of CAF Group F when they host Burundi at 8pm.

This evening will also feature Ladislav Krejci who is with Czech Republic for their World Cup qualifier against Montenegro (7.45pm), Fer Lopez is with Spain’s under-21s who are taking on Cyprus in Euro U21 qualification from 7pm, while Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will be looking to make his Haiti debut in their World Cup qualifier at home to Honduras at 1am.
