Lopez | 'International duty is going to help us'

Fer Lopez believes the international break has come at a good time for Wolves as it will allow the squad to reset and go again once the players return with renewed energy and confidence.

The Spanish youngster produced an encouraging performance in the defeat to Everton ahead of the break, coming off the bench with 25 minutes remaining when his side were 3-1 down, and although Wolves were not able to complete the turnaround at Molineux last Saturday, Lopez is focusing on the positives and believes a first Premier League win is going to arrive sooner rather than later.

On Saturday’s loss at Molineux

“Going into the game at 3-1, it was very tough, but mentally as a team, with the help of the fans, and after especially with the second goal to make it 3-2, we found a lot more confidence and the fans helped us a lot.

“We’re a little bit gutted because we thought we could tie the game in the end.”

On taking positives from defeat

“Obviously, we are a lot of new players, and we are only three games into the season, so I think we need to calm down a little bit.

“But we are obviously gutted with the result because we thought that we could at least get a point, especially, with our performance in the last 25 minutes, I think we were very superior to Everton, but the majority of the chances they had, they scored, and fair play to them because it’s not easy to go in and score, and there were very good goals. So fair play to them.”

On coming back stronger after the international break

“When you lose, obviously, it’s not very good, but we need to work hard and I think the international duty is going to help us a little bit, because it’s time for everyone to gather more rhythm, playing with their national team.

“Then we hope that when we come back together, we have an open mind to learn and to work hard and to win.”

On Pereira’s response in the changing room

“No one likes to lose, especially the manager, and if we lost the first three Premier League games, he’s not going to be happy – it’s normal.

“But we have to work hard to change the situation, and we are going to do that. When he came in here last year, things were much worse than they are now, so we have time to change the situation.

“I think these last couple of performances, against West Ham in the cup, and then today, I think that helped mentally, because we knew that we deserved a little bit more.”

On Grealish’s influence on the Toffees

“He’s obviously a very good player. He’s a £100 million player, so he’s obviously very good. He assisted two of their goals, so he’s a very good player and I like him because he doesn’t lose the ball and I think that reminds me a little bit more of Spanish football, where the players tend to not lose the ball, so fair play to him.

“At the end of the game, I went to congratulate him, and he also congratulated my performance, but he’s a very good player. I’m very happy to play against him, but next time in the cup game, I hope we win.”
