Bellegarde | 'We need to keep going and keep pushing'

Although Wolves fell to defeat in their latest pre-season friendly against RC Lens, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde feels the team are still in a good position with their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.

Having come through the youth ranks at Lens before being given his senior debut in red and yellow, Bellegarde has many happy memories from his time at the club, but despite the defeat for Wolves in Walsall on Wednesday evening, the midfielder was pleased to reunite with some familiar faces from the French side.

On playing against his former club

“It was really good for me. I remember when I played there and I felt good, so I was very happy to see the gaffer and the players.

“I’m very happy. The players were saying to me ‘Now you’re strong because you play in the Premier League, you’re much stronger and you played well’.

“For eight years I was playing in Lens and I have so many memories from my time there and it was a very good time for me. I remember a lot of moments from this club, so it was nice to speak again with the gaffer and the players, but now I’m too happy to be here.”

On a pre-season defeat to Lens

“We didn’t win, but I need the wins. We need to win the next game and score more goals to increase the confidence.

“But if we don’t win the games in the pre-season, then I hope we can win the Man City game and I can take my place on the pitch.

“Although we didn’t win, I feel the players have more power in their legs and are more physical. We need to keep going and keep pushing to be ready for the start of the game against Man City.”

On creating bonds within the group

“My teammates here are really good, but we need more time and enjoy being together when you have time out of the pitch.

“If you enjoy being together as a team you can play better on the pitch and have more connection.”

On aiming to be ready for the new campaign

“I remember last year was a very difficult start to the season, so now we need give our best if we want to start well.”
