Bueno | 'To go back is going to be really special'

Hugo Bueno says he made memories that will stay with him forever on loan at Feyenoord but is now excited to be reunited with his Wolves teammates.

The Spaniard spent last season on loan in the Eredivisie in a bid to gain opportunities on the pitch and experience, and he did exactly that, turning out 30 times for the Rotterdam outfit and experiencing Champions League football for the first time.

The 22-year-old is currently in Slovakia representing the under-21s Euros, but does so on the back of an enriching spell in the Netherlands, which he believes has made him a better and more rounded player.

On the need for a loan

“The first thing that came to my mind was I needed to show a bit more. Last season was a good season, I played quite a lot of games, but every time I want more, I need to give more. I came here to show my quality and play a lot of games, win experiences and to learn as well. A new league, you learn a lot of things.

“Everything was so quick. I remember the first week that I came, I went straight into the team. I knew it is a club that needed to win quite a lot of games, so I remember they drew the first game, and we needed to win the next one, and it was my debut as well, and I went straight in, and I felt really good since the beginning.

“The Premier League is absolutely amazing, the quality, the intensity, but here, to be honest, surprised me a lot, because I knew there was good teams like PSV, Ajax, but there's other teams that really impressed me as well. It motivates me to keep going, keep playing and keep showing more. It's been a really challenging thing for me, and I've been enjoying every match.”

On his AC Milan assist

“That will be a moment that will stay with me forever. You always dream to play this kind of game and if you can make the difference, it's even better. I was a little bit shocked, especially after the game. Then when the days goes by, you think how special that moment was.

“I used to watch it on TV and suddenly you are on the pitch hearing that [the Champions League music]. It was really special. You dream as a kid to play in this type of competition, especially the competition that we did against really, really good teams. That made it even more special. In a football career, you just have these memories that stay with you forever and this loan gave me a lot.”

On working with van Persie and de Wolf

“He’s been brilliant [van Persie]. He gave the team the boost that we needed. Sometimes you need this change to someone who gives you this intensity. Someone like him, the player that he's been is absolutely amazing. He’s been really good for the whole team. Since he came, he gave us that thing that we needed.

“He's [de Wolf] always been a really good support, because he’s someone that you can really talk to, and he's always there for you. He loves Wolves a lot, it's amazing and he's a really funny guy. He wasn't a lot of years there [at Wolves], but he told me he really enjoyed it and it's something really special for him. Even today, he speaks a lot about it.”

On developing his game at Feyenoord

“In your career, you will have different managers that will come across to you, and you will need something new to give. These little things help you a lot in the future. I remember against AC Milan I played as a winger, then you drop to left wing, play a little bit more inside, play wide. It gives you a lot.

“It's never going to be easy. You have these little setbacks. I remember the first week after my good debut. I had an injury the day after, so it's been a little bit up and down. When you are feeling great and you're feeling confident, suddenly something happens. It's part of football, you just have to deal with it, keep working always to try to come back better. Sometimes you're good, and then you're not, but it's part of football.”

On following Wolves from afar

“I've been tracking a lot since the first day. When they were struggling, people were asking me if they will go down but I had no doubt about the quality of this team. I know all the teammates and I knew they were going to show what they can do. I've been in touch with the guys that were there last season, especially the ones that speak Spanish.

“They were asking me how it's been, and also me to them, how it is over there, how are things going, because there’s been a lot of changes as well. To have that connection, even when I'm away, is really important to me, because you have friends. I'm really excited to see the guys and see how they’ve been. To go back and watch everyone and see how it’s been is going to be really special.”
