Gomes | 'We controlled the second half well'

Rodrigo Gomes is taking the positives from Wolves’ second half at Manchester City, after Wolves were beaten 2-0 by the champions on Saturday.

The Old Gold trailed by two at the break, and were second half in the opening 45, but the introduction of the Portuguese, alongside Jorgen Strand Larsen, helped Rob Edwards’ side improve after the interval.

Although that improvement didn’t lead to a goal, and as a result Wolves’ five-match unbeaten run was ended, Gomes says there were still positives to take forward next week back at Molineux.

On standing up to City

“Man City are, of course, one of the best teams in the Premier League and in the world. We knew it was going to be a difficult game, but we tried to do our best to take points from here.

“I think in the first half City were better than us, but in the second half we had a good try, but unfortunately didn’t achieve the win or the draw. We need to keep going and keep working.”

On his message at half-time

“To help the team to press and to go in behind. To help the team to get some crosses in and some balls in behind. Be more aggressive, that was the message.”

On picking his moments to attack

“They have a big, big team. Very fast players, very strong players, so it’s difficult to paly against them. You need to take some risks if you want to achieve some results, and I think in the second half we took risks.

“We controlled it quite well. They had a few chances, but I think we controlled the counter attacks well. Now, we need to work more and keep improving.”
