Matt Doherty is expecting a ‘crazy’ atmosphere under the lights at Molineux on Thursday night as Wolves look to build on their Black Country derby victory when they face Manchester United.
The Irishman played a key role in securing the Old Gold’s first derby win at the Hawthorns in almost 30 years on Sunday, and with the squad in high spirits as they return home tomorrow evening where they could extend their unbeaten record at Molineux to 10 matches, Doherty is determined to help keep the run going.
On winning the Black Country derby
“It was very good. It was more for the fans of the club because it’s been a long time since we won a derby game away from home, it’s been years and years.
“It was more for the fans to make them happy and give them the bragging rights over any of their friends, so it was quite important for us.”

On the spirit ahead of facing Man United
“Our confidence is pretty high, we’re on a pretty good run as it is, but you want to keep the run going, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing against.
“We’re at home tomorrow and I know the crowd are going to be behind us, it’s going to be crazy, especially after the weekend, so we’re in a pretty good place going into the game.”
On his first season back at Molineux
“It feels pretty good. I wouldn’t have come back if I didn’t think it would be a nice feeling and a good feeling, and ever since I’ve come back, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it – pretty much.
“A lot of it has changed, but a lot of it has still stayed the same, so it still feels like home. If I didn’t have these feelings, I wouldn’t have come back, so those feelings are still there.”
On aims for the rest of the season
“We’re not putting any targets on pieces of paper or chalkboards, or anything like that. The target will just be to play as well as we can every game, finish as high as we can and implement what the manager’s trying to do.
“He’s still new into the job really, it’s still only his first year here, so we’re trying to follow him, follow his pattern of play, follow his ways of thinking, so for us, it’s just to keep improving and finish as high as possible.”
