Gomes’ journey to Wolves

As Joao Gomes makes his first move away from boyhood club Flamengo to the Premier League, wolves.co.uk reflects on the Brazilian’s burgeoning career so far.

Despite only being in his fourth season as a professional, the 21-year-old has already enjoyed plenty of success in Brazil, and a pictorial journey below guides supporters through his highlights.

21st October 2020 | Gomes came through the Flamengo youth set-up to make his senior debut in the Copa Libertadores, as he came off the bench in a 3-1 win over Junior FC.

1st November 2020 | Having figured on the bench a month earlier, Gomes earns a first Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A start as he plays the whole 90 minutes against Sao Paulo.

20th December 2020 | Two more league starts follow for Gomes – both home fixtures at the historic Maracana – as he features for Flamengo in their wins over Santos FC and EC Bahia.

7th February 2021 | Gomes ends the 2020 season having made three outings in the Copa Libertadores and 11 league appearances as Flamengo claimed the title.

22nd May 2021 | The midfielder nets his first senior goal as Flamengo overcome Fluminense in the Carioca Championship 2021 final match at the Maracana.

22nd May 2021 | After the first leg of the final, Gomes secured the victory with his side’s third goal of the second leg when he found the net three minutes from time.

22nd May 2021 | Gomes celebrates his championship winning goal with teammates Arrascaeta and Bruno Henrique.

15th August 2021 | Gomes featured regularly off the bench for Flamengo throughout their 2021 Brasileirao campaign but gets his second league start of the season in a 2-0 win over Sport Recife.

6th February 2022 | Having guided Flamengo to the 2021 Carioca Championship, Gomes is unable to help his side claim the win over Fluminense in the following season’s group stage.

20th March 2022 | However, the midfielder and his side earned a 2-0 aggregate win over Vasco da Gama in the competition’s semi-final to set up a rematch with Fluminense.

30th March 2022 | Following a 2-0 loss at the Maracana in the final’s first leg, Gomes – who played all 180 minutes of the match – and Flamengo were unable to turn the game in their favour.

20th April 2022 | With Flamengo competing in five competitions throughout 2022, Gomes was in and out of the side for their league matches but played the whole 90 minutes in a goalless draw with Palmeiras.

28th April 2022 | Flamengo’s 2022 Copa Libertadores – the South American Champions League – got off to a good start with Gomes celebrating the win over Universidad Catolica in Chile.

2nd August 2022 | Having topped their group, Gomes gets an assist as Flamengo overcome Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals.

31st August 2022 | Gomes celebrates with teammate Arturo Vidal after the Chilean scores in Flamengo’s 4-0 win over Velez Sarsfield in the first leg of the semis in Buenos Aires.

7th August 2022 | Flamengo’s place is booked in the final after a 2-1 win over their Argentinian opponents in the semi-final second leg.

15th October 2022 | After a mixed start to their league season, Gomes begins to play more regularly for Flamengo as the campaign progressed, and here is seen celebrating three points against Atletico Mineiro.

29th October 2022 | The Copa Libertadores final pits Flamengo against fellow Brazilian outfit Athletico Paranaense and having started the game, Gomes helps the side to a narrow 1-0 win.

29th October 2022 | Gomes celebrates lifting the cup by cutting off part of the net at the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Ecuador.

29th October 2022 | After the Copa Libertadores win, the midfielder plays the final four league games for Flamengo as the side finish the season in fifth position.
