Coady | 'We don’t want it to fizzle out'

Conor Coady is determined to ensure much of this season’s good work doesn’t go to waste by letting the campaign “fizzle out”.

Defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday was the third on the spin for the old gold, who have failed to find the net in that same period, which has made a case for a top seven finish look increasing difficult. Coady came out and spoke to the media after the Seagulls reverse, and was in determined mood, certain the players will regroup, stand up to the situation and come out ready to right the wrongs during the final four games of the season.

On the Brighton performance

“There’s a lot to look at, a lot to improve on. I can’t really put my finger on it. It’s something we’ve all got to look at, we’ll speak and need to come together to look at ourselves, with what’s gone on over the last few weeks, it’s not just today.

“The last three games we’ve been beaten, conceding goals and not really creating much. It’s up to us to look at ourselves as quick as possible, because Saturday and the last two games were nowhere near the level we’ve set this season.

“We came up against a good team, who move the ball really well, and we’ve got to respect them, but also play to a way where we get a grip of the game. We didn’t start well, we didn’t go into half-time well, we didn’t start the second-half well, so us as players need to look at ourselves.”

On not letting the season end poorly

“We work hard every day of our lives to make ourselves and this club better, and it’s a hard one to put your finger on. It’s not for a lack of trying, because we gave everything and always do, but it’s up to us to go back to the drawing board and look where we’re going wrong because at the minute the season’s fizzling out, and we don’t want to let that happen.

“After all the good work we’ve done this season, we don’t want to end it the way we’re doing it, so we need to be men, we need to stand up to the situation and look at our own performances, because we don’t want it to fizzle out.”

On the leadership in the camp

“There’s huge leaders. Even the young boys, the way they speak and communicate. The seasons as a whole, up to now, has been really good, but we’re letting it fizzle out. It’s not the staff, the manager or the football club, it’s us as players, whoever goes out on that pitch, who must stand up and be counted.

“We have to realise what’s in front of us. How Brighton played, and Burnley, and we need to stand up to it. It’s up to us to make decisions on the pitch, so it’s important we bounce back and grow up.”

On the hunt for goals

“Other than Saturday, I don’t think we’ve conceded more than two goals all season. We’ve defended fantastically all season, we’ve prided ourselves on that, so we’re there to support the lads going forward.

“It’s up to all of us to score goals, it’s not just strikers, it’s up to all of us to chip in and at the minute we’re all not doing it. It’s getting the balance right, defending properly and getting back to what we’ve done this season. It’s up to us to pull this club forward.”

On big games ahead

“We’re playing the top three teams so have a big say in what’s going on, because everybody’s excited about the top of the league at the minute. It’s up to us to bounce back. We don’t want to go into these games on the back foot, on a negative note, and at the minute we’re doing that.

“It’s up to us to get back into training, look at what we’ve done wrong and listen to the manager. It’s up to us to drag ourselves through it and try to put in a good performance next week.”
