Foundation Diaries | Alix

Next up is Alix O’Donnell, a student on the degree programme run by the Foundation alongside the EFL Trust and University of South Wales, who returns to give us an update.

Alix’s first two diaries are available to look back on from December and March too.

Hey everyone – It’s been a busy few months as always! I finished my final university assignment of the year at the start of April and handed that in. We’re all done with uni now until September when I start my second year, and we’ll be going back up the to the University of South Wales for our third residential. I’m looking forward to finding out which modules we’re doing and learning different things.

It doesn’t feel like we’ve done a year at all! It feels like only yesterday that we started, so it’s been enjoyable and has gone very quickly. It’s the different things that keep it fresh, so you never know what you’ll be doing. You could be delivering in a school one session and doing Premier League Kicks the next, so it’s always fun to do different things.

I’m still doing the Kicks and school sessions as part of my casual work with the Foundation. The more work I’ve done, the more confidence I’ve gained, because I’ve learned what I need to do and how to deliver sessions. I can see myself improving with the support of the coaches so that’s really pleasing.

A couple of us university students managed to get a ticket to the England vs Hungary game at Molineux this month – although the game wasn’t great! But it was good to see how many Wolves fans were there as well as the fans from other clubs. In my opinion you could just tell how many Wolves fans were there by how loud it was at times, so it was a really good experience.

Last time I left you my women’s team, Hednesford Town, were in a three way battle for the league with one game to go. Well unfortunately we lost our final game of the season and ended up finishing third in the league. The whole team played well, I really think we were just unlucky on the day and it just wasn’t meant to be.

We’re looking forward to next season already now. We’ve started an early pre-season to get ready because we’re moving up a division. There are going to be a load of new teams we’ve never played before so we’re just starting to prepare for that – but we’re looking forward to the challenge!

I’ve really enjoyed the season to be fair. It was our first one as an open age team, so we weren’t going into it expecting to be third in the league at the end. We were just going in to see how we’d fare against women’s sides because it’s a lot tougher. Overall, I’m just really proud of the girls and where we finished.

From now on, I’m just continuing the casual work with Wolves Foundation and seeing where it goes from there for the new academic year. The more experience I can get during the summer the better!

Thanks for reading and take care.
