First recipient of Wolves Foundation’s Ian Millard Award revealed

The first recipient of Wolves Foundation’s Ian Millard Award for Outstanding Educational Achievement is an aspiring physiotherapist who achieved a distinction in the first year of his BTEC course at the City of Wolverhampton College.

Mason Leek, aged 17, who had previously attended South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy, is halfway through the Level 3 in Sport qualification and posted an excellent first year of results.

He has now become the first recipient of the award in memory of former Wolves Foundation trustee and Wolverhampton College principal Ian Millard, who passed away in September of last year at the age of 68.

“Mason has been superb throughout this academic year, he has consistently submitted work that has been exceptional,” said course tutor Greg Davison.

“None of his work was below a merit and he achieved a high distinction on his A&P (Anatomy & Physiology) exam which is a very difficult exam.

“He has been a pleasure to teach and the teaching staff around him have noticed his commitment and hard work throughout the year.

“I believe that he wants to be a physiotherapist and if he carries on this high level of work I have little to no doubt that he will be able to achieve this.”

As well as his impressive grades, Mason has also been a key part of the football team which represents Wolves Foundation in the EFL league.

Dan Clarke, curriculum manager in leisure industries, added: “Mason is a motivated, hardworking and determined individual, who achieved this distinction during difficult times for many of us.

“Mason's attendance and punctuality to all lessons was excellent, showing what type of individual he is.

“He is a key member of the sports course and his footballing colleagues, and I have every faith that Mason will progress into the career of his choice and will be a key member of the sports professions.

“Well done to Mason who has produced excellent work and it is a pleasure to have him studying on the programme at the City of Wolverhampton College.”

Ian’s widow Diane and daughters Nicola and Laura kindly invited donations in Ian’s memory after his passing, raising almost £1,700 which was put towards Foundation projects.

Head of Foundation Will Clowes also instigated this annual award which will be presented to a student who displays outstanding educational achievement across any of the Foundation’s courses.

“On behalf of the Foundation, we would like to congratulate Mason whose outstanding performance makes him an extremely deserving recipient of the first Ian Millard award,” said Will.

“As well as being a hugely dedicated and influential trustee of Wolves Foundation, Ian also had such an energy for helping young people make the most of their talents and this award ensures we will continue to remember his positive influence and enthusiasm.”

We are proud of Mason for his achievement and look forward to seeing him progress through his sporting career. For regular updates about Wolves Foundation follow @wwfcfoundation.
