Late winner is 'best feeling in football', says Bennett

Wolves’ dramatic last-minute winner over Newcastle at St James’ Park was ‘the best way to win’, according to Ryan Bennett.

Matt Doherty’s close-range header sealed all three points for Wolves, who head back to Molineux full of confidence following two wins within five days.

On the Newcastle performance

“It was good. It is probably the best way to win. You don’t want to win like that, but when you get that feeling of scoring so late it’s the best feeling you can have in football.

“It was hard though. At times during the game we did find it difficult, but we kept together, we were never down in the game, but we stuck together, kept working and it took us that late to score the goal.

“Jota took the ball and the lads are working hard in the 91st minute, that’s what you need, and we got our reward.

“We’ve stuck together, we’ve worked hard every single day, every single training session. It was all about keeping our heads down and keep working hard.

The results have picked up over the last week and hopefully we can continue that going forwards.

On playing ten men

“It is tough to play against ten men. But you do a lot of it in training, you work against ten, sometimes you work against 11, and it’s always hard to break teams down.

“When teams defend, they ultimately defend with ten men anyway. It makes it a little easier when the ball is coming forward as they generally have one less player up there, but it was up to us to go and force the game.

“But at the back you’ve got to stay switched on. You get in that mindset of you don’t want anything to slip, don’t let anything slip and if we go and nick one, we go and nick one. The worst thing that could happen is that we could give that away.

“Fortunately, we did that. We hung on and got the goal at the end.”

On long throws

“It’s just something that the manager has decided that we could add to our game. With the size of Boly and obviously how good he is in the air, why not utilise it every now and again.

“It came a bit out of the blue, he just told me I was on them, took a couple in training and the first one I put in the other day [against Chelsea] went further than I thought, so it was a surprise to me as well.

“I did it when I was young. I think it was the Grimsby days when I used to take a few, but it’s not been for a while. I needed WD40 on the shoulders to get it going.

On Nuno's tactics

“We know we need to add another dimension. We can’t play all the time, we’d like to, because when we get it down it all looks nice, but sometimes you do need to have that dogged determination and it’s just one of those things we’ve added.

We have a way of playing, we tinker that a little bit, and add some new things.

“We always stick to playing how we do, but there’ll always be changes within it, and that’s just one of them.”
