Fresh Impetus

Gaffer on the 'big picture'

Kenny Jackett says he will be looking at how to reshape his squad over the summer in a bid to find “fresh impetus”.

With several loan players on the books, and others out of contract, the Head Coach is keen to make changes to try and improve on this season, set to come to a mid-table finish after Saturday’s final game against Sheffield Wednesday (12.30pm).

And Jackett says options are open on midfielder Kevin McDonald, out of the side in recent weeks, with the Scot still able to force his way back into the picture.

“That hasn’t been decided yet,” Jackett says of McDonald’s future.

“We’ll certainly need to see the big picture of the squad and the finances.

“We’re quite unbalanced at the moment.

“He’s fully fit, I’ve just decided to go with other players in central midfield and having a look at different partnerships.

“Where Kevin fits in, we have to make sure we get the big picture.

“Whether his time out of the side is used positively towards being very determined and very fit in pre-season, and coming back and being one of the pair that we need in that midfield to try to dominate and take us into the upper reaches of this league.”

Jackett says any decisions on the out-of-contract players will not be announced until after the end of the season.

And he says there are no specific plans to let other players go, given the current size of the squad.

He added:  “Once the loans have gone back, we won’t be blessed with a big squad anyway.

“We do need fresh impetus this summer, definitely.

“We have quite a few central midfielders, if Lee Evans comes back, which he will.

“(But) there are no plans right at the moment to move people out.

“Where I’m looking is how to be able to improve it.”
