Defining Moments | Hugo Bueno

Charting the key moments in Hugo Bueno's career which made him the player he is today.

Wolves Academy debut

17th August 2019 | Wolves U18s 2-0 Man United U18s

Joining Wolves at the age of 16 as a first year scholar from his local grassroots club CD Areosa in Vigo, Bueno first linked up with Steve Davis’ under-18 side. The Spaniard transitioned from an attacking midfielder to left wing-back in his first few months under Davis, and started in his new position on his under-18s debut in a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Compton Park. Bueno showed his quality throughout his first season at Wolves, quickly progressing into the under-21s after scoring and assisting in another 2-0 win in February 2020 as the under-18s overcame Newcastle United.

First senior assist

18th October 2022 | Crystal Palace 2-1 Wolves

Bueno continued to shine in the academy, and would regularly train with the Wolves first-team, but it wasn’t until his youth coaches, Davis and James Collins, took interim charge of the senior side that the left wing-back would get his first opportunity in the Premier League. After coming off the bench to make his senior debut in a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, Bueno was in from the start a few days later due to an injury to Rayan Ait-Nouri, and took only 31 minutes against Crystal Palace at Selhurst park to claim his first senior assist when his cross was turned home by countryman Adama Traore.

Under-21 international debut

11th September 2023 | Spain U21s 1-0 Scotland U21s

The young Spaniard remained a regular in the Wolves first-team throughout the 2022/23 season under Julen Lopetegui, as well as Gary O’Neil, and it wasn’t long before his performances in Old Gold were rewarded with a second youth international call-up. Having made his one and only outing for Spain’s under-18s in a 2-1 win at home to Denmark, eight months after his initial move to Wolves, Bueno earned the first of six under-21 appearances for his country – three of those coming at last summer’s U21 Euros – with a start in a narrow friendly victory over Scotland in September 2023.

First senior goal

16th March 2024 | Wolves 2-3 Coventry City

Bueno’s first senior goal for Wolves could have been one of the most memorable in the club’s recent history, if not for what was to follow. The Old Gold faced Coventry City in the FA Cup quarter-final at Molineux with an injury depleted side, and had fought back valiantly from going behind. With the game entering the final minutes, Bueno was played in on goal by Ait-Nouri and slotted the ball into the far corner in front of a jubilant South Bank to put his team ahead. However, two goals deep into added time from the Sky Blues condemned Wolves to one of their most heart-breaking of defeats.

European debut

2nd November 2024 | Girona 2-3 Feyenoord

Although he would watch Wolves play Europa League football from the stands at Molineux during the early years of his gold and black career alongside his academy teammates, Bueno’s first opportunity to play European club football came on his loan spell with Feyenoord last season. Lining up against a Girona side featuring current Wolves teammate Ladislav Krejci in the Champions League group stage, Bueno played the opening 71 minutes of a crazy match, which included two missed penalties and two own goals – including one from Krejci – as Feyenoord claimed victory on the road.
