Preview | West Ham vs Wolves

After an almost four-week break, Wolves are finally back in Premier League action on Friday night as Rob Edwards’ side travel to West Ham United and wolves.co.uk is here to preview the 8pm kick-off.

1 | Roll Call

Wolves will do without Matt Doherty and Sam Johnstone in the capital but otherwise have a fully fit squad to selection from. Doherty is struggling with a niggle so will not travel, while Sam Johnstone is suffering from a shoulder problem which might rule him out for the remainder of the season.

West Ham look set to welcome a host of players back for Friday’s important game at the London Stadium. Jean-Clair Todibo is expected to be fit, having been out since the middle of March with a calf injury. Crysencio Summerville has also missed the last three matches with a calf injury, but Nuno Espirito Santo is positive that he’ll be involved, so too Callum Wilson. Konstantinos Mavropanos has passed concussion protocol and is available, while Alphonse Areola is fit, despite being withdrawn early last weekend against Leeds United. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also available for selection, having missed last week’s cup tie due to international duty. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski remains out with a back problem.

3 | Journey to Friday

The 25-day break came at the worst possible time for Edwards’ men as they were one of the form teams in the Premier League after picking up seven points from their last three matches. A month ago, Wolves' only win of their league season had come in the reverse fixture at home to West Ham, but victories over Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa and Liverpool under the Molineux lights – which saw late goals in both games from Rodrigo Gomes and Andre, respectively, secure the points – were followed up by a fightback from two goals down away to high flying Brentford to pick up a point from their visit to west London. Wolves’ front two pairing of Adam Armstrong – his first in gold and black – and Tolu Arokodare both found the net, with the duo also striking the woodwork in a dominant second half display.

West Ham have not experienced anywhere near the break in play compared to what their opponents on Friday evening have gone through, having taken on Leeds United in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup just five days ago. On Sunday the Hammers fought back from two goals down, only to lose on penalties and drop out of the cup. Before the international break, West Ham were on a mixed run of form, picking up a win, a draw and a defeat from their three Premier League games. This included three points away at Fulham thanks to Summerville’s crucial strike, a hard-fought point at home to Manchester City, and a 2-0 loss away in the West Midlands to Aston Villa.

4 | A rare victory in east London

Wolves’ record away to West Ham since the hosts moved to the London Stadium has not been the greatest, with the Old Gold claiming just two victories on their travels, with both of those coming during their first two years back in the top flight.

After getting their inaugural win of the season there in 2018/19, Nuno’s side returned to the London Stadium in their first match after the Covid-19 restart in June 2020, putting two past the Hammers without reply.

Raul Jimenez’s goal on 77 minutes was Wolves’ first for more than 100 days following the enforced break in the season, as Adama Traore’s cross was headed home by the Mexican, before Pedro Neto bagged the second as he met Matt Doherty’s ball into the box with a delightfully struck volley into the rood of the net.

West Ham | Fabianski, Ngakia (Fredericks 81), Rice, Diop, Cresswell, Noble, Soucek, Antonio, Fornals (Yarmolenko 81), Anderson (Lanzini 67), Bowen.

Wolves | Patricio, Doherty, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Jonny (Vinagre 89), Neves, Moutinho, Dendoncker (Neto 64), Jota (Traore 64), Jimenez (Gibbs-White 90).
