Three members of Wolves’ international contingent were celebrating on Thursday following big wins for their countries.
Hee Chan Hwang helped South Korea to their 11th straight World Cup with victory over Iraq, while Jose Sa, Nelson Semedo and Portugal booked their place in the Nations League final.
While Santiago Bueno and Uruguay must wait for qualification, it was generally a positive start to the international period for the Old Gold players representing their countries across the globe.
Hwang | Iraq 0-2 South Korea
South Korea knew a point in either of their final two qualifying matches would secure their place at the World Cup in North America and victory over Iraq last night did exactly that. Hwang started on the left as Korea dominated, particularly after a red card for Ipswich Town striker Ali Al-Hamadi. The Old Gold attacker played an hour and South Korea eventually found their way to victory. It means Hwang is in line for his third World Cup appearance, having scored a dramatic winner against Portugal at the last tournament in Qatar. They finish their qualifying group at home to Kuwait on Tuesday knowing one point will be enough to confirm top spot ahead of Jordan.
Sa & Semedo | Germany 1-2 Portugal
Sa and Semedo were also celebrating on Thursday as Portugal reached the Nations League final for the second time. Portugal are the inaugural winners of the competition and came from behind to beat Germany this time around. Both Sa and Semedo were sat on the bench when Germany took the lead in Munich through Florian Wirtz. However, Semedo was one of three brought on after 58 minutes and Portugal turned the semi-final on its head thanks to goals from Francisco Conceicao and Cristiano Ronaldo. Eight past or present Wolves players were in the squad on the night and they’ll now face Spain in Sunday's final, also at the Allianz Arena.

Bueno | Paraguay 2-0 Uruguay
Santiago Bueno’s Uruguay side passed up the opportunity to move closer to the World Cup after defeat to Paraguay. The Wolves man was an unused substitute, as he was for their latest qualifier against Argentina in March. He watched on as Matias Galarza opened the scoring and Brighton & Hove Albion man Julio Enciso’s penalty wrapped up the win. Depending on results elsewhere, Uruguay may have qualified for the World Cup before they next kick a ball. Either way, victory over Venezuela on Wednesday would seal their place.
