'King John' Richards latest Old Gold Club inductee

UEFA Cup finalist and one of Wolves’ greatest ever strikers John Richards will be the latest former star to be inducted into the Old Gold Club.

‘King John’ made more than 480 appearances in gold and black and will be next Wolves hero to discuss life at Molineux when he joins Mikey Burrows and Chris Iwelumo on the 13th episode of the club’s popular new podcast.

The 68-year-old, who earnt his single England cap while at the club, will talk about his 14 years at the club when he is inducted into the Old Gold Club, sponsored by Wolverhampton Building Supplies.

Richards will also speak about notching almost 200 goals for Wolves during a half hour Facebook and YouTube video this evening, before the extended podcast is released on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

After turning professional in 1969, the skilful, quick and decisive striker racked up a tally of 194 goals which remained a club record until 1992.

Richards netted the first of his 144 league goals in September 1970 before going on to help Wolves reach the final of the first ever UEFA Cup the following season.

He was Wolves’ leading marksman in six out of seven seasons, scoring the winning goal in the 1974 League Cup final against Manchester City, as well as being part of the team who defeated Nottingham Forest in the 1980 final.

In October 2018, Richards was named the new vice-chairman of the Wolves Former Players’ Association.

The latest Old Gold Club will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube from 6pm this evening, while the full podcast will be available on all the regular channels afterwards.
