Wolves Women 1 (Bavington 16)
Birmingham City Ladies 4 (McCann 30; Howell 53, 80; Bird 90)
Wolves produced a battling display and took the lead against favourites Birmingham before being beaten in the County Cup Final at Solihull Moors on Wednesday night.
Kirstie Bavington headed home Hayley Packer's corner in the 16th minute to put Wolves in front against a Birmingham side who were hot favourites given they play two divisions higher in the FA Women's Premier League.
But Blues fought back though, and Amy McCann levelled the scores in the 30th minute.
The second half saw Blues take the lead in the 53rd minute as Mikaela Howell headed in from a cross.
Wolves were pushing hard to find an equaliser, with Sophie Walker and Packer both coming close, but they couldn't find the net.
They also had some defending to do, and held firm until ten minutes from time when Howell notched up her second and Blues' third to make it 3-1.
Wolves fought and pushed right to the end, but a tired side were caught out again in the 90th minute as Danni Bird made it 4 to win the game and the cup.
Wolves manager James Astle said: "In the first half we stuck to our gameplan and our formation, and it was nice to score first, although it would have been better shortly before half time!
"In fairness our goal seemed to kick-start Blues, and they pressed and showed their true quality.
"I was pleased to go in 1-1 at the break, but after Blues' second goal they brought on three international players and the difference showed.
"I was really proud of my players. They're a young side, and for several of them it was their first Cup Final. I feel they really acquitted themselves well.
"It was also great to see injured players Natalie Widdal and Jay Bradford joining the team to come up and receive their medals.
"I know the players are disappointed, but I think they can all hold their heads up high."
Now Wolves turn their attention back to league action as they travel to Sporting Club Albion for their penultimate game of the season on Sunday.
