Wolves were forced into extra time by a determined Leafield side, but Dani Selmes' second goal of the game goal secured their place in the Birmingham County Cup Final after an entertaining contest.

Leafield got off to a good start, hitting the post in the first minute, and Wolves' defence were having to work hard. As they started to get into the game, Hayley Packer was brought down in the Leafield penalty area in the 20th minute, and Selmes duly converted from the spot to put Wolves ahead.

Their lead was short-lived, though, as Leafield were awarded a penalty themselves just seven minutes later. Leigh Dugmore's kick and follow-up were both pushed out by Wolves' keeper Becky Thomas, but her third attempt was headed into the net to level the score.

Both teams had chances to go ahead, but the half finished 1-1 with the place in the final still up for grabs.

The second half started as the first had finished, with both sides battling hard. Wolves' youngster Abby Pope came close on a couple of occasions, while Selmes and Amber Quick also tested the keeper.

At the other end keeper Thomas had some saves to make, and defender Layla Salter cleared off the line to keep the score level and force extra time.

As the battle continued, it was Selmes who finally found the net for Wolves in the sixth minute of extra time. Anna Perks played the ball into the area for Selmes, who turned and shot home.

Leafield continued to press, but Wolves defended well, and had a couple more chances of their own, forcing three successive corners towards the end of the game.

Pope shot just wide from the second, and put the third just over the bar, but in the end they had done enough and now progress to the final where they'll play either Aston Villa or Birmingham City on at a date to be arranged.

Manager James Astle said: "It was a hard game. Leafield were certainly a much better side than when we played them at home in the league. They never stopped running, and their confidence was high.

"In extra time the girls knew they didn't want penalties, so we pressed on just looking for that goal, and in the end the pressure worked.

"For those watching it was a great spectacle of football. I'm proud of every single player, including the substitutes, because at the end of the day we're a squad, and I know they'll all be celebrating.

"There are a lot of youngsters in this team who've never played in a final before, which makes it all the more special for them."
