Sporting Club Albion Women 1 (Phillipowski 8)
Wolves Women 2 (Selmes 55, 60)
Wolves came from behind to progress to the semi finals of the Birmingham County Cup against local rivals Sporting Club Albion on Sunday afternoon.
Albion had much of the play in the first half and made their dominance pay after just eight minutes as Hayley Phillipowski latched onto a through ball and rounded Wolves keeper Becky Thomas to put the hosts ahead.
Albion were putting the visitors under pressure and won several free kicks, but Wolves soaked it up with some staunch defending and managed to get to the break without conceding again.
Wolves came out fighting and in the 55th minute a cross from Sophie Richards found Dani Selmes, pictured, whose well-placed header beat the keeper to make it all square.
Spurred on by the goal, Wolves started to dominate, and it took just five more minutes for Selmes to add her second, beating the keeper to make it 2-1 to Wolves.
Wolves then laid siege to the Albion goal, and with some neat football Anna Perks, Hayley Packer and Richards all came close.
The final 15 minutes saw Albion try to get back into the game, but the defence held firm, and keeper Thomas made an excellent save, tipping the ball over the bar.
Manager James Astle said: "We knew what we were coming into today. Albion are a very good footballing side, especially in the middle of the park.
"It's an old saying in football - a game of two halves, but that was what it was. At half time the girls came in knowing they hadn't performed to the best of their ability in all areas of the pitch.
"The second half saw them closing down, forcing the error, and counter-attacking, and we scored two good goals.
"Towards the end we had a number of forced changes due to injuries, but the substitutes helped to finish off a great second half performance."
The sides meet again next Sunday February 14 - this time in a league fixture. The game will be played at Goodrich Sports Ground, Stafford Road, Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, with a 2pm kick-off.
