Narrow Defeat For Young Wolves

A young Wolves reserve side can count themselves a little unlucky not to have come away with a point from their clash with an Arsenal team currently lying second in the Barclays Premier Reserve League table.

But a goal midway through the first-half proved to be the deciding factor although on the plus side for the Molineux men were successful comebacks for Dave Edwards, pictured, and Sam Winnall.

Edwards was prominent in the early exchanges and Winnall looked bright on his return to the game after a serious knee injury sustained last summer.

Andre Landell posed a threat to the home defence when he burst through the middle but he was closed down before he was able to get a shot in.

Keeper James Shea had to turn a 30-yard shot from Winnall around the post and at the other end Luke Freeman was wide of the mark after he had been set up by Craig Eastmond.

Then Aaron McCarey had to race from his area to clear from Sanchez Watt.

But the Wanderers keeper was beaten in the 22nd minute after Watt had lifted a free-kick from the left into the box and, following a brief scramble, Francis Coquelin forced the ball home from close range.

A good run down the right flank by Winnall ended with a cross that went through the box with no-one able to get a touch, before Emmanuel Frimpong was wide from long range for The Gunners.

McCarey made comfortable saves from Chuks Aneke and Frimpong before Landell was again denied a shooting opportunity after he had taken a pass from Nathaniel Mendez Laing.

In stoppage time Eastmond went into the book for a late challenge on David Davis.

Half-Time: Arsenal 1 Wolves 0

Winnall ran through the middle and shot narrowly wide in the 54th minute and, on the hour mark, he was replaced by Lou Harris who had only been on the field for a matter of seconds when he too fired wide.

Home skipper Eastmond wasted a good opportunity of stretching the home side's lead when he blazed over the bar from a good position, before Harris had another chance, heading over after a cross from Mendez Laing.

A spell of Arsenal pressure saw Eastmond hitting a drive that flew narrowly wide and Jamie Reckord heading over his own bar to clear a cross from substitute Rhys Murphy.

Reckord then survived a penalty appeal for hands when he cleared a Freeman cross although the referee was well positioned to view the incident.

With two minutes remaining Reckord went forwards and threaded a pass through to Harris who couldn't control the ball properly and was wide with his shot.

With time running out Landell tested Shea with a hard, low shot but the keeper ensured that the points were staying at home.
