Two Alvechurch goals in two second-half minutes condemned a young Wolves team to defeat tonight as they exited the Birmingham Senior Cup at the quarter final stage.

After Wolves had shaded the first half chances second half goals from Craig Gregg and Callum Gittings put paid to the hopes of the visitors whose misery was completed by the late sending off of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

The first shot of the game fell to Gittings, who fired wide of the target from 20 yards.

But it was Wolves who were the stronger side in the opening minutes, and had a chance when James Spray burst through the midfield but was fouled by Matt Collins just outside the box.

Nathan Rooney stepped up to curl the free kick around the wall but Alvechurch keeper Ian Kimberley dived well to save.

Spray tried to continue after the challenge but was forced out of the action a few minutes later with Liam McAlinden coming on in his place midway through the half.

David Davis wasn't too far away with a 25-yard angled shot and then a cross from Jack Metcalf was helped into the six-yard box by Andre Landell, but Daniel Rolfe cleared at the expense of a corner before any Wolves player could profit.

Eight minutes after the restart Anthony Forde's cross resulted in a scramble in the Alvechurch box and Mendez-Laing latched onto the half clearance and hit a shot which drew a fine save from Kimberley.

But on 57 minutes Alvechurch took the lead when Gregg turned and fired home from close quarters.

A minute later it was 2-0 when Gittings shot went across the face across the goal and inside the far post.

It could have been worse in the 63rd minute when Scott Smith's header hit the crossbar and went over following a corner.

Wolves hit back and from a Forde corner Rooney's header was held on the line by the keeper who was diving backwards to save.

A run by Mendez-Laing across the edge of the Alvechurch penalty area then finished with a shot which was blocked.

The ball broke to McAlinden who fired over the near angle from a good position.

Metcalf had a shot cleared from in front of the line by Brendan Kelly before Mendez-Laing went into the book for a late challenge on Gittings.

In the final minute Wolves night of misery was compounded as Mendez-Laing was sent off for dissent.

WOLVES: McCarey, Metcalf, McCone, Dunleavy, Kostrna, Davis, Rooney, Forde, Spray (McAlinden 25), Landell, Mendez-Laing.
