Wolves 0
Aston Villa 3 (Collins 13, 66, Forrester 37)
This game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests with missed chances costing Wolves reserves as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against League leaders Aston Villa.
With just over a minute gone the Villa defence failed to close down Nenad Milijaš as he advanced and from 25-yards the Serb hit a shot that was narrowly wide of the mark.
Then Milijaš fed Andy Surman who cleverly beat his marker in the box with his low cross resulting in a scramble before the ball was cleared.
Surman was then guilty of a bad miss as he scooped the ball over an open goal after Greg Halford's long throw had dropped at his feet.
It proved to be a costly miss as Villa moved into a 13th minute lead. Wayne Hennessey's clearance was charged down by James Collins who slipped a short ball to Andreas Weimann and took the return pass before shooting into the empty net.
From a Halford corner, Milijaš found Geoffrey Bia Mujangi whose shot on the turn hit Stefan Maierhofer and bounced to Villa keeper David Bevan.
Dominik Hofbauer was wide with a free-kick after Segundo Castillo had fouled Johnathan Hogg before Harry Forrester replaced the injured Weimann in the Villa line up.
And the substitute had only been on the field for six minutes when he increased his side's lead. An inch perfect pass from Moustapha Salifou released Isaiah Osbourne on the right and although Collins missed the cross that followed, Forrester ran in to ram the ball home.
In stoppage time Ciaran Clark cleared Surman's shot off the line after another long throw from Halford had the Villa defence in trouble.
Half-Time: Wolves 0 Villa 2
Just two minutes after the resumption Bevan had to palm down a vicious effort from Milijaš with the ball bouncing over the head of Maierhofer before being cleared.
Then George Friend tried his luck, beating two men as he cut in from the left before shooting a yard over the bar from the edge of the area.
Milijaš was even closer with a free-kick from 25-yards out after Curtis Davies had tripped Mujangi but, again, the ball was too high.
On 66 minutes, after absorbing more pressure from Wolves, Villa broke to add a third goal with Collins glancing home a header after Forrester had supplied the cross from the right.
In the closing stages, despite the margin of the deficit, Wolves continued to push forward and Mujangi volleyed straight to Bevan who was soon in action again as he turned aside a Maierhofer header.
It summed up Wolves' night when a hooked shot from Sam Vokes that was heading for the back of the net bounced to safety off a defender who knew little about it.
