Wolves Dent Gunners Record

Posted on: Wed 21 Oct 2009

Wolves 2 (Stearman 45, Hemmings 54)

Arsenal 2 (Sunu 20, Watt 55)

Wolves reserves dented Arsenal's 100 per cent record by holding the Londoners to a draw at The Bucks Head with Richard Stearman and Ashley Hemmings both scoring with quality strikes.

The Molineux team enjoyed the majority of the attacking play in the opening minutes but there were no worthwhile attempts on goal.

Carl Ikeme had to punch clear a Gilles Sunu corner in a crowded home area before Stearman was inches away from giving Wolves the lead with a powerful header after Scott Malone had fired over a free-kick from the right.

Stearman had another chance moments later but he failed to connect properly with an attempted volley allowing Lukasz Fabianski an easy save.

Sunu gave The Gunners a 20th minute lead when he ran onto Samir Nasri's perfectly weighted through ball and shot past the advancing Ikeme.

There was an almost immediate response from Wolves after a quickly taken Malone free-kick released Natt Mendez-Laing on the right. He cut inside Kerrea Gilbert but his angled shot went over the bar.

Chris Iwelumo was close with a sidefoot volley that saw Fabianski making a smart diving save following a cross from Mendez-Laing.

Hemmings then broke through on goal but as he was about to shoot Luke Ayling ran across to clear.

In first-half stoppage time Wolves deservedly drew level after another Malone free-kick was met by Stearman who this time beat Fabianski all ends up.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 Arsenal 1

A skidding Mark Randall free-kick from 30-yards almost took Ikeme by surprise but the keeper managed to knock the ball behind for a corner.

Then Hemmings tried a shot from 25-yards that went straight through to Fabianski. But, in the 54th minute, and from virtually the same position, Hemmings unleashed a rising drive that flew into the top corner of the net.

Virtually from the restart, Arsenal pulled level after Watt controlled a short pass from Randall before sliding the ball past Ikeme.

Play continued to swing from end to end and Kyle Bartley had to intercept a low cross from Malone as Hemmings lay in wait .

From the corner conceded, taken by Malone, Mendez-Laing shot over the bar from close quarters.

Arsenal substitute Rhys Murphy missed a good chance when he fired wide after being set up by Watt, and then Nathan Rooney went into the book for a late challenge on Murphy.

In the dying minutes both sides went close to grabbing a winner. Watt fed Murphy who was about to shoot when Ethan Ebanks-Landell, an interval replacement for Matt Hill, made an excellent saving tackle.

Then an inswinging Malone corner was cleared off the line by Cedric Evina who, seconds later, clearly handled a curling shot from Kyle Bennett with the referee waving aside penalty appeals.

Deep into stoppage time it looked as if Sanu had won it for Arsenal with a wickedly curling shot that was arrowing towards the top corner until Ikeme somehow got a hand to the ball to turn it over. It was a fantastic save to round off an excellent game of football.
