It was at the end of the January transfer window of 2009 that Christophe Berra joined Wolves for an undisclosed fee from Heart of Midlothian.

 

The defender had been a long-term target of boss Mick McCarthy and put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year contract.

 

He went on to win a place in the starting line-up over the closing stages of the season making 15 appearances as Wolves lifted the Championship title.

 

Berra came through the ranks at Hearts, making his debut in November, 2003.

 

He went on to make almost 150 appearances, also picking up experience of European competition as well as being captain.

 

Having been capped by Scotland at various age groups he made his full international debut as a substitute in a friendly against the Czech Republic in May, 2008.

 

Berra made a positive impact at the start of the 2009/10 season, holding down a regular place in the Wolves team as they adapted to life in the Barclays Premier League.

 

He made 32 league starts and a further two apiece in the FA and Carling Cups and contributed as Wolves' improved defensive displays over the second half of the season helped secure their survival.

 

The Scot was one of Wolves' most used Barclays Premier League players of the 2010/11 season, making 31 starts and one further appearance from the substitutes bench.

 

After Wolves clinched their top flight survival, Berra then enjoyed another boost by heading home his first international goal as Scotland defeated Wales 3-1 in a Carling Nations Cup tie in May, 2011.
