Edwards Winning Run Is Over

Posted on: Fri 27 Jan 2012

Dave Edwards marked his 100th league appearance for Wolves against Aston Villa last weekend in exactly the same way he did his first against Scunthorpe.

With a goal.

Must be keen on a drop of claret!

However, the big disappointment of the goal against Villa was that Wolves didn't repeat the result of that first appearance back in 2008 and instead finished on the losing side.

And that was the first time the Welsh international has scored for Wolves - without them going on to win the game.

"It's no consolation getting a goal when you end up losing the game," he said.

"I think it was the first time I've scored in a Wolves shirt and we've not won which is disappointing.

"Taking that out of it then it is a landmark to reach 100 league appearances and I've enjoyed all of my time at Wolves."

There was rather more enjoyment in the first half against Villa on Saturday as opposed to the second.

Edwards admits it was crucial for Wolves to keep their noses in front against Villa having come from behind to lead 2-1, but that the concession of a goal so soon after the interval played a part in their defeat.

"We were bitterly disappointed after the game," he said.

"I think home games like that are the ones we need to win, especially when we played so well in the first half.

"We fought back so well from going behind and just needed to start the second half better having gone 2-1 in front.

"If we could have gone 15 or 20 minutes without conceding we knew the game would have opened up and we might have had more chances.

"And after conceding so early in the second half we then lost Manny to injury and Karl to a sending-off and everything went against us.

"It was a big hit to our confidence to lose the game after that first half and it's been a case this week of building things back up again.

"We've got a free weekend before the Liverpool game and need to get back out there feeling fresh and going for a crucial three points.

"We know Liverpool are a very good team and in the past maybe you'd have taken a point against them but we now we could do with all three and that's what we'll be aiming to do."

Dave Edwards

Edwards plundered one goal at Molineux on Saturday, but could have had another, when striking the ball cleanly and first time with his left foot only to see the clean connection directed straight at relieved Villa keeper Shay Given.

And that followed a similar chance at Tottenham the week before, when Edwards instead sliced the ball which finished up wide of the target.

More time in the team, and continuing to get in the right positions, and he believes more goals will follow.

"I had lengthy conversations with coaching staff and particularly Pat Mountain (goalkeeping coach) after the Tottenham game," he says.

"I was pretty sure I would get a chance from a cutback off Jarvo or Kights if I was arriving late.

"In the past I've done well in those positions with scoring my first goal for Wales from a cutback and my first in the Premier League from a cutback.

"Against Tottenham I tried to open my body out which was the wrong thing to do and so I said I wanted to put my foot through the next one.

"I did that against Villa and tried to put it back in the direction it came from but unfortunately it wasn't far enough in the corner.

"It ended up going straight to the keeper.

"I am sure I will get more chances and I am sure I can chip in with more goals this season.

"Playing more games will get me more confident and I am sure I will take some more chances."

Edwards will be hoping to keep his place for Tuesday's visit of Carling Cup finalists Liverpool (7.45pm), for which there will be at least one change due to the three-game suspension for Karl Henry.

With Jamie O'Hara injured, and Nenad Milijaš having previously served a three-game ban, there hasn't been much chance for continuity in an engine room boosted by the arrival of Arsenal loanee Emmanuel Frimpong.

"It's disappointing that it will get broken up again," says Edwards.

"We've not had much luck in the central midfield department this season.

"I've been out for a big part of it, we've had suspensions with Karl, Jamie and Nenad and then Jamie has been injured recently.

"It's been a bit of a problem position in terms of getting some consistency in there.

"It's been difficult to build up understandings but losing Karl now will give other people the chance to come in ahead of him coming back and Jamie being fit.

"As always, it's up to whoever comes into the team to do well and try and stake a claim."
