Wolves International: Deadly Doyle

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

Kevin Doyle's superb goal for the Republic of Ireland and Michael Mancienne captaining the England-under-21s to success were the Wolves-related highlights of another busy night of international action.

Doyle produced another man-of-the-match display against Andorra capped by the sensational left foot strike on 41 minutes, not to mention a part in Robbie Keane's third goal for Ireland and a clear penalty when he was bundled over in the area shortly afterwards.

Kevin Kilbane had opened the scoring with a header for Ireland - with Doyle in attendance as well! - while Andorra's response in their 3-1 defeat came from Christian Martinez just before half time.

Wolves striker Doyle was pleased not only with his first competitive goal for Ireland in almost a year but also the team's perfect start to Euro 2012 qualifying with six points out of six.

Doyle had to come through a particularly physical test from the no-nonsense Andorran defence but emerged unscathed as he was withdrawn for Wolves team-mate Andy Keogh, currently on loan at Cardiff, seven minutes from time.

Ireland now top the group on the same number of points as Slovakia, who won 1-0 in Russia, those two teams now providing the next opposition for Doyle and company next month.

"Andorra made it difficult for us and it was so stop-start but we tried not to get frustrated," said Doyle.

"We were expected to win, and expected to win by a good few goals, but we ended up doing a job.

"It was fun out there for me with the big lad at the back but I'm delighted to get the goal and delighted we won.

"It was tough out in Armenia for all of us do it made up for it to get a goal with a sweet strike tonight.

"We're on top of the group and are very happy with six points from the two games which gives us confidence for two very tough games in a few weeks time.

"We've got Russia here and Slovakia away which will be two massive games and harder then these.

"It's when the group will really get going but these two results set us up nicely for them."

Kevin Foley was not named among the substitutes for the Irish while Christophe Berra was an unused substitute as Scotland beat Liechtenstein 2-1 thanks to an injury time winner.

Michael Mancienne meanwhile captained England-under-21s to a second victory in five days and this the one that booked their place in the qualification play-offs for the European Under-21s Championships.

England followed up their 1-0 win in Portugal on Friday with a 3-0 victory against Lithuania at Colchester, Danny Welbeck (2) and Marc Albrighton the goalscorers.

Mancienne, who played the full 90 minutes, also went close to scoring in the first half with a 20-yard shot beaten away by keeper Vytauta Cerniauskas.

Elsewhere Nenad Milijaš was an unused substitute as Serbia struck a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Slovenia.

All the remaining internationals are expected back at the Compton training ground on Thursday as Wolves step up preparations for Saturday's trip to Fulham.
