Boss Declares His 25

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today declared himself "delighted" with the 25-man squad which will see the club through to the re-opening of the transfer window in January.

After the window slammed shut yesterday, Wolves will lodge their 25-man senior squad with the Barclays Premier League today.

On top of those players listed, Mick can also add to his options by using any players under the age of 21 such as Geoffrey Bia Mujangi, the trio of Danny Batth, Sam Winnall and Ashley Hemmings who recently played in the Carling Cup, and other members of the Development Squad.

Sam Vokes would normally come into that same category, but the striker is on loan to Bristol City until January and is set to pick up the threads of that deal when he recovers from a hamstring injury.

One notable absentee from today's announcement is Michael Kightly.

The winger has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from problems with his patella tendons, and, as Mick explains, will continue his recovery with "no pressure" and the prospect of going out on loan to be ready for a possible squad return in January.

"We're just going to let Kights get on with it," the boss explained.

"He's still not quite ready to come back and there's no pressure on him - it will take as long as it takes.

"There's no time limit on it either.

"When he is fit, he won't have played since last November and it would be very difficult in that situation to go straight back into the Premier League.

"So when he is ready, we'll be able to discuss with him the possibility of going out on loan, which he can do before we have the chance to revise the squad in January."

Steve Kemp, head of the medical department, believes it's the "sensible decision".

"This is a very complex injury as has been proved by the case of other players," says Kemp.

"The key factor is not to rush a player back and we've taken our time with Kights.

"He was progressing well but unfortunately has now suffered a minor setback.

"Rather than trying to carry on and push him back too quickly we have taken the sensible option of pulling him out of training and taking more time so than when he is right he'll definitely be 100 per cent.

"It's not a major setback, it's understandable and expected from this type of rehab.

"He's having time to settle down and then we'll start progressing him again.

"With the new ruling about the 25-man squad, rather than trying to get him back to Premier League football in a certain timespan, the gaffer, having spoken to us, has decided to take the pressure off by leaving him out for now.

"And the plan would be to get some loan football before he looks to get back into the Premier League again."

Stephen Hunt is named in the squad as he continues his rehabilitation from a foot injury.

And the boss is now relishing looking ahead to the next four months without any side issues from the transfer window.

"I am delighted with the squad I've got at my disposal," he says.

"Now we've got the 25 sorted and we can crack on without any interruptions until January.

"As well as the players named we've also got the under-21s like Geoffrey, Danny, Sam, Ashley and the other lads in the Development squad.

"And there are a lot of lads waiting in the wings who are ready to take their chance if they are called upon."
