Big Game Build-Up: Wolves V Newcastle

Posted on: Sat 28 Aug 2010

PRE-MATCH BUILD-UP

Wolves return to Barclays Premier League action at Molineux this Saturday, after a scrappy 2-1 win over Southend in the Carling Cup on Tuesday evening. Newcastle United are the visitors to Molineux, arriving on the back of their 6-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend. (Kick-off 3pm) Click here to listen to the match on Wolves Player.

It's been over six years since Wolves last played the Magpies, and that was on the 9th May 2004 in the top flight.

Wolves were already relegated, but on their final away game of their first Premier League campaign, Dave Jones' side managed to hold a Newcastle team desperate for points to a one all draw at a packed and noisy St James' Park. (Click here for match report)

The other encounter between the sides that season, at Molineux had also ended all square. A matter of a few inches was the difference between one point and three for Wolves, on 29th November, as Henri Camara's header clipped the top of the crossbar in the dying seconds of the lunchtime showdown with Newcastle. More memorable than those two league games however, for many Wolves fans, would be the encounter between the sides at Molineux the previous season, during Wolves promotion campaign. It was of course the dramatic FA Cup third round tie that ended 3-2 to Wanderers. (Click here for match report)
